DVD : Valery Gergiev Conducts The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra [2000]
Being relatively new to the world of classical music - I had no idea what the music contained on this DVD was like. All I knew was that I can't get enough of the fearsome interpretations created by the great Valery Gergiev.

The three pieces of music all have something in common - their quiet, subdued passion. They are all like a young girl, hiding away her inner most thoughts - sometimes happy, sometimes frightened, sometimes light, sometimes dark. The highlight for me was the Viola concerto - Yuri Bashmet controls the emotions of this piece as though it was he who had composed it. It is as though he is pulling at some dark, despairing memory and with every note pulls it out of his being - performing an exorcism of something that ... Read More:

This is a live recording of a production in Salzburg in 1983. This delectable comic opera is superbly performed by first-rate singers and orchestra under the experienced baton of Riccardo Muti. One feels that this is a performance in which all the people involved selflessly serve the intention of the composer and the librettist. The stage sets and costumes are traditional and pleasing to the eye.

This production is ideally cast. Vocal matching is excellent, while acting is never overdone. The singers - all non-Italian speakers except Bruscantini - are at home in recitatives as well as in singing. Margaret Marshall (Fiordiligi) is excellent in some taxing arias. Ann Murray (Dorabella) is very good in duets with James Morris (Guglielmo). ... Read More:

This live recording of a performance in Salzburg in 1990 is very enjoyable. It is sung by an excellent team of singers, with impressive orchestral support by the Vienna Philharmonic, expertly conducted by Solti.

Placido Domingo is at his most ardent and impulsive as King Gustav. Jesephine Barstow (Amelia) is very good, if not outstanding, in the role of the woman torn between husband and royal lover. She brings out the feelings of a distraught and vulnerable woman. Leo Nucci (Renato) is in his element, at first warm-hearted in his friendship for the King, then forceful in his desire for revenge when he realizes that Amelia loves the King. His voice is full and firm. Florence Quivar (Ulrica the magician) is vital, while Sumi Jo is a pert Oscar. ... Read More:

DVD : Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - Herbert Von Karajan - Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 In E Minor Op. 95 From The New World [1985]
Such a famous symphonic masterpiece deserves the best musical treatment. Karajan was in a class of his own. With a few exceptions from slavic collegues (Ancerl and others) his "New World" mantains an ideal balance between string esxpression and brass strong sonorities. The Wiener are in top form and the video direction gives interesting glimpses on the performers. Orchestral details are newly focused and the sound is better than average, with smooth string sound and natural dynamics. Not to be missed for any reason.

This performance was obviously a very special event. The Vienna Philharmonic gave the world premiere of the symphony in 1891, and the Monastery was Bruckner's home for many years before he moved to Vienna : indeed, he is buried beneath the very church where this performance was given. The special intensity comes across extremely well, and everyone gives of their best, not just the performers, but also the camera team under the experienced direction of Brian Large. For me, the high point is the climax of the slow movement (bar 239), where the sound of the Orchestra seems somehow even more sumptuous than before, and the camera comes to rest on the conductor's face, as Boulez allows the stunning impact of Bruckner's symphonic concept to make its point in the acoustic ...
