DVD : Vienna State Opera Gala 2005 - Gala Concert 50th Anniversary Of The Re-Opening
On November 5, 2005 the Vienna State Opera held a gala to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the reopening on November 5, 1955 of the Opera after its destruction by Allied bombs in 1945 followed by the ten-year-long reconstruction. They pulled out all the stops and had a cast of stars (as well as current stalwarts of the Opera): five conductors (Ozawa, Gatti, Mehta, Thielemann and Welser-Möst) and such luminaries as Domingo, Baltsa, Gruberova, Hampson, Terfel and Kirchschlager, as well as the fabulous Opera chorus and the Vienna Philharmonic. The gala featured scenes from six of the seven operas given new productions in that 1955 season -- Don Giovanni, Der Rosenkavalier, Aida, Meistersinger, Frau ohne Schatten and Fidelio. The whole ... DVD : Elektra [1989]
I was lucky enough to see Eva Marton's portrayal of Elektra at Covent Garden (in a far superior production than this one) and this recording is worth seeing just to see how committed an artist she truly is. The fine nuances of her performance are wonderfully absorbing, yet she has the momentous power needed for the voice in this terrifying role - you can see her exhaustion at the final curtain calls, and feel like you've lived through the performance with her! Brigitte Fassbaender gives another strong performance, showing the genuinely vulnerable side of Klytemnestra that is often overshadowed, but towards the end of the long duet with Elektra she steps over that fine line into caricature. Cheryl Studer's Chrysothemis is good, but not great, ... Read More:

This is how awful it used to be and illustrates what a very long way we have travelled in thirty years of opera production especially in Europe. (Americans will love it, of course. But then....) If you want to see actors too old for their parts, with minimal acting skills, with bows and curtseys and curtain calls after every scene breaking what little dramatic flow there might have been and, of course, absolutely NO director's concept whatsoever, then this is for you and you are welcome to it. This is the kind of opera production that people expected to see as late as 1978, now we want something more: actors who can act and look right for the characters they are portraying, directors who can direct and who are prepared to go beneath what ... This performance was in many ways excellent; the only thing I really didn't like was the dance of the slaves. Somehow that scene seemed to belong to another era than the rest of the opera. But the atmosphere was quite awesome as in Musorgsky's operas generally. The singers are good and the staging is fine. But after seeing the opera I felt quite bleak for awhile.
