This is Zeffirelli at his very worst. An incredibly tasteless and vulgar production, with more cheap gold than anyone could bear in a casino show and without a single original idea about the staging of this wonderful but overexposed opera. The level of incompetence is hard to beleive and La Scala has reached a new low in its undistinguished recent history. The Orchestra sounds very good, but Alagna is uncomfortable as Radames, with a voice inadequate for the role, although he does try. Urmana is somewhat better, but it isn't enough. To make things worse the video producer thinks he can improve this sad event with silly camera movements and very distressing close-ups of the fabrics of every costume! Do yourself a favour and totally ignore this ... Read More:

This is a mesmeric DVD, full of visual beauty and surprises. It presents a performance of Stravinsky's 'Le Rossignol', based on Hans Anderson's tale of the nightingale (much adapted). The music is performed by excellent artistes and is very fresh, original and beautiful - quite exotic, as befits the subject. Visually, the story is presented in mixed media - conventional staging and acting intermingled with computer-generated images which are usually appropriate and often startling. It's very difficult to describe these in words - you need to see the DVD - but they are always interesting and sometimes breathtaking. They therefore enhance the already intriguing story and wonderful music. A great deal of time, care and thought have gone into the ... Read More:

The house lights go down, and Carlo Guelfi appears spotlit in the centre of the stalls, to deliver the Prologue from I Pagliacci; he gradually moves to the front, climbs onto the stage, and takes off his coat - the performance is beginning! The curtain goes up on a set of white blocks - rather unusual set for Pagliacci, I thought. But then, somewhat confusingly, the gentle opening phrases from Cavalleria begin...

Here we have a performance of Cav and Pag from Madrid, directed by Giancarlo del Monaco, who believes the Prologue applies equally well to both operas, and so should be performed at the start of the evening. Both operas are played back to back on this DVD (although presumably there was an interval in the theatre), trying ... Read More:

Tony Palmer's 1998 documentary on Wagner's final opera is something of a disappointment. It is subtitled "The Search for the Grail", but a good two-thirds of the DVD is largely a retelling of the story by a re-enactment of the opera itself, Parsifal mainly (but not always) portrayed by Placido Domingo, who narrates throughout the documentary. Since most people who would have bought this DVD would presumably already be aware of the opera's story, it is difficult to understand at whom this is aimed. Wagner lovers will already know the story and the music; and those who did not know it would be confused. Besides, this DVD tells little that is new. What is left accounts for about thirty minutes. If I wanted to experience a performance of the opera, ... Read More:
