I admit that the first time I saw this movie I didn't like it at all. Now it is several years later and I have watched almost all of John Hannah's work, so I caught this movie on cable television. On my second viewing and much to my surprise, I absolutely loved it! I was already familiar with Gwyneth Paltrow's work. She is a very talented actress. Now, I also think John Hannah is a very talented actor.

As (Helen), Gwyneth Paltrow was smart, energetic, sexy yet sweet, very pretty, made the best of each situation, and sometimes made mistakes. She was a totally likable character.

As (James), John Hannah gets embarrassed and says silly things in the movie like, "never end a sentence with a preposition - must look ... Read More:

There are problems with this film. Firstly, it has an inadequate score. What it needs is a grand theme tune which recurs throughout, but it doesn't have one. Secondly, it has been clumsily edited together by what seems to have been a passing butcher. Both the editing and the lack of a decent soundtrack suggest that little attention was paid to artistic or aesthetic considerations once the actual filming had been completed. I would also say the quality of the acting is patchy, at best. Rod Steiger is actually quite good as Napoleon, managing to convey the multi-faceted nature of the man in spite of the occasional banalities of the script. Christopher Plummer looks alright as Wellington, but he never quite seems to inhabit the character or capture ... Read More:

I enjoyed this DVD of Mary Wesley's Camomile Lawn very much more than the book, presumably greatly to the credit of its Director Peter Hall but also to the strong cast. All are good but of particular note are Felicity Kendall who gives a tremendous performance, the eye-pleasing Jennifer Ehle whether clothed or not, her sensible counterpart Tara Fitzgerald, similarly eye-pleasing but in a quieter way, and Rebecca Hall as the juvenile star. And of course there is the coast of Cornwall - contrasting with scenes of London in the blitz with a memorable scene of Tara and Rebecca on the phone to Cornwall from under a table while near-hit bombs (and the ceiling) were falling. Its the sort of film that lives with you for days after the viewing and which you want ... Read More:

The unrelenting echo of the sonar punctuates this understated J. Arthur Rank film with a taut atmosphere of suspense. Novelist Eric Ambler's intelligent script remains faithful to Nicholas Monserrat's novel about the last voyage of HMS Compass Rose and all who sailed on her. The splendid performances of Jack Hawkins as her captain and Donald Sinden as his #1 bring the novel to life, as do the performances of the entire ensemble cast, which includes Denholm Elliott. One of the best aspects of the Rank organization films of this era is the devotion that went into the delineation of even the minor characters.

Some viewers may shun this picture because it was filmed in black and white. This is a shame, because "The Cruel Sea" is so absorbing that ... Read More:

A great DVD, especially for the price - a tribute to the effort that Network put into releasing British films. You'll cry at the end!

Its been quite a number of years ago now but I do remember seeing the TV Adaptation of The Sculptress on BBC1.

I think the acting by Pauline Quirke, who played Olive Martin, was quite chilling and showed that she could move away from the role of Sharon she played in Birds of a Feather and other comedic roles she was used to. You were also convinced of Olive's innocence within the film.

But I do look forward to reading the novel version of The Sculptress to make comparisons between the TV Adaptation and the novel quite soon.

Heaven help anyone getting married whose mates take an interest in this potty film ! It certainly should have a do not try this at home tag . What happens to Martin Clunes is pretty cruel - but the cast rescue it from being just Men Behaving Badly The Movie as does the scripting . One does wonder why the Carry On's could not have thought up this idea in the late 1970's . It would have made a great adult movie style challenge to the Confessions Films . A typically British film which like Four Weddings & a Funeral , Love Actually , Calander Girls & The Full Monty prove that there is still a market for such home grown movies . Nice to see another British success story at the box office - those finance people who told Peter Rogers that Carry On Again Nurse would ... Read More:
