*****POSSIBLE SPOILERS IN MY REVIEW*********

This is in my top 5 greatest ever movies, falling only behind Goodfellas, Stand By Me and Casino.

I watched the film first and then read the book, and I don't think it matters which way you do it because they are both outstanding masterpieces.

This film will make you feel nauseas, it will make you frustrated, angry, upset, relieved and then leave you with a tear in your eye. I challenge you to hate a movie character from any other movie as much as you hate the guards in this film, you will rebel and support a murder in cold blood, and be thankful when the guilty murderers walk free at the end of it. It is a story of revenge, bitter yet just revenge.

Barabbas with Anthony Quinn is from 1962 and now looks very dated. But it is a film from it's day and as such can still be enjoyed.

I did!

I guess I am a purist when it comes to the classics. I like the movie script to follow the original work which I am sorry to say this movie does not. From the first scene in the movie, it is almost like they took extracts from all of the book's events and rearranged the entire timeline. Some of the scenes never happened, others did not happen as they were portrayed, there are many lines in the movie which never were uttered by any of Tolstoy's characters and to me the choices of actors for some of the roles were very misguided. Who in their right mind would choose Henry Fonda as Pierre. Pierre was described all through Tolstoy's epic as being fat, slovenly, very large, etc., wide of girth. Though Henry Fonda was a very fine actor, they seemed to have ... Read More:

DVD : Sharky's Machine [1981] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Burt Reynolds' riposte to Clint Eastwood encroaching on his redneck comedy turf with his orangutan comedies was to make his own Dirty Harry in Atlanta-style thriller, Sharky's Machine. Originally intended for John Boorman but in the end directed by the star himself, it's an out-and-out commercial package with Reynolds a narc who gets busted down to the Vice Squad (literally - they're in the basement) who sets out to nail a mysterious crime lord who is backing Earl Holliman as the next governor. You can guess the rest, but while Reynolds tends to lose sight of the story at times he has a good eye for individual scenes and almost gets a performance out of Rachel Ward as the high-class hooker he falls for. The romantic subplot is unusually well developed (particularly ... Read More:

DVD : The Desert of the Tartars [1976]
The Desert of the Tartars is an epic movie where nothing happens over 2 hours and 21 minutes...except to show us the gradual and fascinating disintegration of a group of military officers in an isolated outpost of empire who are full of pride and who lead lives as pointless as their careers. It helped me understand things better when I looked up the author, Dino Buzzati. His book was published in 1940 shortly after he had served some time in Ethiopia as Mussolini postured and killed his way to a new Roman empire. Many thought the book was a veiled reference to the sort of empty grandiosity Mussolini embodied. The book became widely available only after WWII.

Here we have a group of officers, none of whom have ever seen combat except for one who can barely ... Read More:

As a fan of the original 1965 HBO series "Get Smart",i bought this first film version from 1980.I already had the second film "Get Smart again",from 1989.The initial reaction i had while watching was to compare it to Sean Connery's last bond picture "Never say never again".That bond film was not "official" and didn't have the old Bond music, a different "M", etc. This film looks the same, the old music has gone,Barbara Feldon who played agent 99 has gone, the old "control" has gone, even Smarts trade mark car has gone. All these returned in the next film "get Smart again".Don Adams who played Maxwell Smart still looks in good shape and the film is still amusing in parts but overall it's a let down. The best part is a chase scene through Universal studios during one of the outside ...
