Of the 4 leads in this musical, only Vivienne Blaine belongs in a musical, being a major vaudeville & Broadway singer & hoofer before this was made.

Despite this, it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience, good colour and sound and an outstanding supporting turn by Stubby Kaye. Jean Simmons retains her English innocence well as a Salvation Army lass and even assists in helping you forget that Damon Runyon's picaresque language translates hopelessly to screen.

But the best bits are Brando & Sinatra. Brando surprisingly fits well into Sky Masterton and tackles things with enthusiasm. There's also a permanent smirk on his face, because he knows that Frankie wanted HIS part all along, and doesn't it show! Frankie's ... Read More:

Although Amazon only describes this version as the 1945 film of State Fair, which is on disc 1, the 'special features' disc contains the 1962 film in its entirety, with the commentary from Pat Boone as stated (though there are sometimes long gaps in this). I just thought that I should make this clear as it is not obvious in the description.

As for the films, well I find that I like both versions for different reasons and cannot decide between them. If you want to compare the two versions then this two disc special edition is definitely the one to buy, as all other releases just contain the 1945 film. Although I find this musical slightly more lighthearted than some of the others by Rodgers and Hammerstein, the songs and music are beautiful as ... Read More:

I bought this video for my grandparents who always said it was their favourite film. They asked me to sit and watch it with them (and to be honest, I couldn't muster up much enthusiasm).
But I loved it. It was wholesome family viewing and I have watched it a few times since.
And I am a 30 year old fun loving girl! So a must-see for all ages.

This is how to release the old movies - make them flawless. The picture quality and sound is absolutley brilliant. not much of Perry Como in this film but it is so pleasing to at last get a copy that does justice to film. Brilliant transfers!!!!!

The single star rating is a little undeserved. An opportunity to be reminded of the real star quality of performers who have done their time on the boards, who can sustain performances as broadway performers, should not be missed.

You will not find TV reality show 'stars' who find their way onto the stage on the crest of a wave of hysteria, and deny those who are time served and deserve the break from getting the headlines and work they have strived for; and rub the salt in by not being able to stand the course.

This seems to be the way of the UK West End anyhow. To me it seems that Broadway occasionally get stars from TV, who got to TV via hard work and an ability to sustain performances anyhow; then go on to Broadway.

This is a treasure, so occasional ... Read More:
