This is the first Spaghetti western and a superb film. Both Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone are on top form and the storyline, dialogue and action are tremendous.

DVD : The Spaghetti Western Collection [1964]
I believe this particular box set offers the best value for money when it comes to this must have collection of films. I'm not really one for special features particlarly, and there is little of that here. To be honest when you own these three films you have no need to be distracted by such things.

The films themselves? Well, theres little that needs to be said. They launched the career of one of the most iconic actors of the twentieth century and brought richly deserved attention to one of cinema's most stylish directors and one of its most able composers. For Clint Eastwood, Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone these three films represent their very best work.

A real oddity. This was made by horror maestro Terence Fisher (Dracula, Curse of Frankenstein, Brides of Dracula, Hound of the Baskervilles) in Germany, with the actors speaking English - and then being dubbed into English again by other actors. Bizarre.

Christopher Lee is surprisingly good as Holmes, and it really makes me wish he'd been given a better opportunity to play the character at that stage in his career. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the detective movies of the 1930s - the Charlie Chans, the Holmeses with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce etc.

As a work of art, this is very patchy, but for fans of its star or its director, it's worth a look.

DVD : Spaghetti Westerns [1964]
Directed by the man who put Spaghetti into the Western - Sergio Leone! the box set is a definite buy, western and Clint fans could not live without them. Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach present a truly memorable role in 'The Good the Bad and the Ugly, which is famed as the best western of all time. Although this box office hit was filmed in 1966, after its two predecessors, it acts as a prequel as it was set during the civil war.
