DVD : Elite Squad [2008] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Fans of city of god/city of men should check this out however the feel good factor is something that is missing. Set in the Brazilian shanty towns, the story focuses upon 3 individuals within the police force and BOPE (elite police force) who use as much force and ruthlessness as the drug dealers and criminals. Two of the main characters aspire to become soldiers of BOPE although both men have different characteristics and methods but slowly realize what they must do to succeed. The third character wants to leave BOPE to start a family but must first groom a replacement in order to do so. This is where the new recruits come in. As the film proceeds the viewer is increasingly shown the ruthless methods the police rely upon to get results. Of ... Read More:

This film is a visual feast; the cinematography is utterly exquisite and even without a storyline, I would have been transfixed throughout. Walter Salles (Central Station, Motorcycle Diaries) is fast becoming one of my all time favourite screen directors. This is a tale of family honour, pointless revenge, brotherly love, hopeless division, 'an eye for an eye until everyone is blind,' says little Pacu. An age old family feud separates the two families and determines that their beautiful sons perish, one by one. Tonio, (Rodrigo Santoro) is trying to seek love and reason (as well as finish his chores) before his time is up - when the blood stain turns yellow in the wind and he will be hunted down. Set in 1910, in the desert landscape of the Brazilian ... Read More:

A marvellous version of a true story that enfolds from a doctor entering this terrible prison for the first time to a terrible disaster that happened.

You can always tell a good foreign film when you don't notice the subtitles and this is definitely such a film.

The character development is fabulous as are the stories that are told.
Definitely worth seeing

"Lower City" was quite good. As a whole, I enjoyed this film but was far from being blown away. All three of the leads are give an opportunity to make an impression. The script however, leaves a bit to be desired. After watching this yesterday the movies that came to mine was City of God/ Amores Perros/ Y Tu Mama Tambien simply because it was to be expected. It is one of the good films that had recently came out of South America. However, "Lower City" doesn't quite live up to its comparative brothers but does manage to create a feel of its own. I empathized with each of the characters and felt they were played brilliantly by the actors involved. There was a real sense of raw passion with the helplessness of the poverty/ crime lifestyle they find themselves ... Read More:

DVD : God Is Brazilian [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
What would happen if God wanted to take a vacation? Brazilian director Carlos Diegues plays with that idea in "God is Brazilian". The results are good, but far from excellent...

"God" (played by Antonio Fagundes) decides to take a vacation from the constant nagging of mankind, but first needs to find a replacement. He has settled for a Brazilian man, and has decided to make him a saint. The real problem will be finding him, something that "God" will try to do with the help of a somewhat selfish young man, Taoca (Wagner Moura), and a beautiful woman, Mada (Paloma Duarte).

"God" will visit many different places in Brazil, and the spectator will be able to glimpse at least some of the many stunning natural beauties that country has to ... Read More:

DVD : Caminho das Nuvens [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
"The middle of the world" is an unusual Brazilian film, directed by Vicente Amorin and inspired on a true story. It is not that well-known, but it is actually quite good.

The spectator will travel more or less 2,000 miles across Brazil with a family of seven, from rural areas to the big city of Rio de Janeiro. Did I mention that the members of this family travel on bicycle? Their purpose is to find a job for Romao (Wagner Moura), the father, that allows him to support his family. For that, nothing less than "1000 reais" (approximately US$ 300) will do.

Unfortunately, finding a job like that is not easy for Romao, but he will not settle for anything else, and specially not for a job that allows his wife Rose (Claudia Abreu) to support him. ... Read More:
