DVD : Pinocchio : Special Edition [1940]
now it may be a classic, but i'm afraid i was really disappointed with this film. my 5 yr old was frankly bored watching this, it was very slow to get moving. the story line was not what i was expecting. the jimmney cricket / conscience was to abstract for him to understand in the way it was presented. and there was a terrible bit later on with pinnochio getting drunk and smoking cigars. that bit raised a few tricky questions.

what i had expected the main story line to be - pinnochio's nose growing long when he lied, occured only once for about 20 seconds in the middle of the film and never again.

we will not be watching this one again
sadly not enjoyable or educational

This is the best film ever but try as I might I can not get hold of it for region 2. If anyone knows where or how I can find this film to play on my DVD player, here in England, I would be grateful.
Same goes for "My Beautiful Son" AKA "Strange Relations" in the American market.

DVD : A Tale of Two Cities [1935] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
A Tale of Two Cities is an outstanding example of a film which in memory seemed great and a classic, but when seen again is just a classic. That's not faint praise, either. Jack Conway may be listed as director, but make no mistake...this is David O. Selznick's film. It carries his strengths with great emotional impact, but it carries Selznick's flaws just as emphatically. Thanks to Charles Dickens, we have a hugely empathetic tale of noble sacrifice and redemption, played out against the extremes of injustice represented by the French Revolution. Thanks to Selznick, that story has been brought to life with cinematic fervor, strong actors, melodramatic situations, vast and detailed settings, and a screenplay which may run for over two hours but which never ... DVD : Friendly Persuasion [1956] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
One of the best movies made about The War Between the States. It's on an equal footing with "Shenandoah".
The story is about a family of Quaker farmers who refuse to get involved with the war, but do in the end.
Historically perfect as well as being great entertainment.
Buy and enjoy.

7.Bringing Up Baby [1938] (REGION 1) (NTSC) starring: Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Charles Ruggles, Walter Catlett, Barry Fitzgerald

DVD : Bringing Up Baby [1938] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
I have seen this many times but the humour never wears off. Possibly the most effective pairing of Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn (I have not seen all of their films together). Hepburn is wonderfully eccentric as Susan Vance and Grant's Dr. David Huxley is ever so funny. Even when I am not watching, the thought of him in those clothes (after Susan takes away his normal ones) makes me laugh. It is impossible to choose a favourite scene as they are all brilliant, whether at the golf course, hotel, country house, etc. The film represents the genre at its best and jokes are wittily scripted, unlike modern day comedies that more often than not, use sex, bodily functions and strong language to supply the laughs. All I can say is: they don't make 'em like this anymore.

8.On the Avenue [1937] (REGION 1) (NTSC) starring: Dick Powell, Madeleine Carroll, Alice Faye, Al Ritz, Harry Ritz
directed by: Roy Del Ruth
