I bought the DVD 'Candy' for a friend of mine who loves films of that era. I managed to find the time to watch it before handing it over to him. Although it definitely is not a great film, I loved watching it because it reminds those of us over 50 that life was good in the past. The film contains all of those things that are now considered politically incorrect and we, all of us, are poorer for it. The film contains a rape scene, up-skirting shots, unprofessional behaviour from the medical profession and truly humourous lines and scenes that left me rollicking in laughter. The only reason that I am writing this review is to give due credit to Ewa Aulin, without whom the film would not have been as good. She did not even get a mention on the ... Read More:

Fun, intriguing, a bit eerie, and a little bit silly, "The List of Adrian Messenger" was, in 1963, a bit of a throwback to 1940s-style British mysteries, with some added promotional gimmickry prevalent in late-'50s and early-'60s pop cinema.

I first saw this film on TV as a child and was fascinated (and a little creeped out) by the disguises -- particularly by the removal of a false eye early in the film. (Sorry for the spoiler.) Being a young movie fan I was familiar with all the Hollywood "guest stars" purported to be littered throughout the film in disguise, and had fun trying to spot them (I say "purported," since their presence is disputed -- read on).

Another look at "Adrian Messenger" with a bit more mature ... Read More:

This is the best film ever but try as I might I can not get hold of it for region 2. If anyone knows where or how I can find this film to play on my DVD player, here in England, I would be grateful.
Same goes for "My Beautiful Son" AKA "Strange Relations" in the American market.

Based on the novel by Anya Seton, 'Dragonwyck' is a reasonably good gothic story, but I'm always ever so slightly disappointed that a movie/story with such atmosphere does not have a ghost. However, this is a very watchable and enjoyable movie.

Stars Vincent Price as Nicholas Van Ryn, who though never what one would have called 'handsome', in some shots in this does seem so - particularly his profile which can be seen in the scene at the Harpsichord where 'Mirander' is reciting some lyrics.

Vivienne Osborne is great as the neglected 'Johanna Van Ryn', and it is a great pity that her character is written out so soon... The little girl is entertaining too, but she doesn't get a big enough part.

8 people are invited to a remote island "Indian Island" mansion by their host Mr. U. N. Owen; two people are already there as the butler and cook, a husband and wife team. Once there they find that their mysterious host has accused each of murder and commences to dispatch the guests in the order of a song of Ten Little Indians. Finding that they are cut off from the outside world they must find Mr. Owen and neutralize him before they are all dispatched. If it gets down to the last two you have a pretty good idea who it is.

All the clues are present; can you detect whodunit and why?

Pretty well acted version of an Agatha Christie classic. Everyone remembers this standard movie version "And Then There Were None" (1945) with ... Read More:

DVD : Humphrey Bogart Classics - Vol. 2 - The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre /To Have And Have Not /They Drive By Night [1948]
All the films are good in this one. They Drive By Night the earliest and least seen is an excellent earlier Bogie. To Have and Have Not superbly simmering and I would certainly have been seduced by Lauren Bacall - as Bogie was on screen and off. But the greatest is the Treasure of the Sierra Madre. John Huston directed his father - the brilliant Walter Huston - to an oscar for Best Supporting Actor in this movie. He later directed his daughter, Angelica, to an oscar and now is the only oscar winning director to direct both father and child to oscar winning performances. The performances are consistently brilliant and the cinematography is fantastic with the whole film moving from tension to ease to tension until Bogie's final madness and death and back ... DVD : Treasure of the Sierra Madre [1948] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
A classic film of ambition turning to greed and mistrust ending in paranoia and insanity.

This is a classic Bogart film with terrific performances all round.

The subject of the film is "there's gold in them their hills" - the so called treasure in the Sierra Madre mountain range.

John Huston (who also directed Bogart in "The African Queen") directs his own dad (Walter Huston) who plays the Wiley old prospector who just knows he's going to strike gold. He leads a 'down at heel' Bogart, and (relatively unknown) Tim Holt into the mountains where the fun really starts.

After months of hard gruelling work mining the gold, their task is then to retain it.

A dark, (quite literally) gritty tale ... Read More:
