Two of Will Hay's best comedies, including his regular side-kicks Moore Marriott and Graham Moffat. 'Oh Mr Porter' is the better of the two. Hay plays a bumbling, self-important man who has been in a range of jobs and has caused chaos at every turn. His latest job is as Stationmaster at Buggleskelly, a station near the Irish border. Needless to say, Buggleskelly is awash with eccentric characters of every description, including gun runners and an ancient postman. The film is a riot from start to finish. 'Convict 99' sees Hay, a bemused schoolmaster, mistakenly appointed as prison governor to one of the toughest prisons in the country! Needless to say, he treats the convicts like naughty schoolboys and they don't like it one bit! This is a ... Read More:

It's a great nuisance the Connoisseur Video version is only on video, because to my mind it's considerably superior. This one lacks the tinted sequences (sepia in parts, red for the burning of Atlanta) and, much worse, the music sounds like the third form doing its best. That may, for all I know, be more authentic, but music is so important in a silent that this is authenticity I could do without. On the other hand, the sharpness and overall quality of the print is really quite amazing - especially compared to much more recent films such as Lost Horizon.

DVD : The Trap [1966]
Saw this back in the sixties and it has always stuck in mind. In 1967 I wrote my GCE essay and it was the story of this film - it was my 4th try at English Language and I passed - if I recall rightly I did little more of the paper than the essay - reckon it was a gem and I believe the story won for me. Later I always told my children (3 sons)the story of the man, his woman and the howling wolves that chased him through the snowy forest to his cabin door and the difficulties and horror they had to face. Its an archetypal story that cannot help but be retold. I continue to be haunted by it and wait for a DVD release of it to check out its resonance.

I bought this purely for Lindsay Wagner and she shines as always. Film is OK but a bit silly. Beautifully set but why do the women make so much noise at night when trying to escape from the baddies? Worth a watch if you can pick up a copy cheap enough.
