A weak but pleasant farce based on a play, there's really only one reason to watch this movie, and that is Danny Kaye. The man had a unique talent for making tongue twisting lyrics not only possible but intelligible. This movie is no exception, with a few witty songs, fewer still witty moments, and more than soupcon of gurning along the way.
In terms of content, the style is light and frothy, with the satirical nature of Gogol's play on which the movie is based is sweetened away almost in its entirety. Message filled farce has given way to Danny Kaye vehicle, often way over the top. That said, it does raise a smile with infectious humour. There are a few good lines.. "Oh, I love my family, but I'd give my six kids to get rid of my ... Read More:

What would you do if you were stuck in a lifeboat with a hodgepodge of people and limited supplies? Does this sound like one of those corporate games? Well watch this movie and see how close you come to this fascinating Hitchcock (John Steinbeck story adapted by Jo Swerling) tale. Shot in monochrome adds to the hopeless feel.

It is WWII and a ship is torpedoed and its lifeboats are shot at. Before they went down they dispatched the dastardly U-Boat.

Now an only remaining Lifeboat is being loaded one at a time with a self-centered female journalist (Tallulah Bankhead), a boisterous businessman (Henry Hull), the radio ship's operator, a timid nurse, a ship's steward, a wounded sailor (William Bendix), and an overbearing ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite films. It's a comedy romance set in Italy, for one month a year an Englishman goes over to Italy to his villa there and spends time with his Italian Lady. However, in his absence his staff have turned the villa into a hotel. There are lots of laughs and just thinking about this film can make me smile. Fantastic.

Very interesting study of a master and his servant/heir. The DVD contains two discs with slightly different transfers and soundtracks (european and american). A commentary track with a Dreyer-scholar which is very informative and worth listening to containing production facts and more about Dreyer as a person - I listened to it right after watching the movie and had to listen through it all. Luxurious edition, highly recommended!

Despite being directed by Jean Renoir and set in Vichy France, This Land is Mine never for one second gives the impression that there's anything remotely French about it or its characters, but in a strange way that works in the film's favor as a propaganda picture: this isn't a universally French story but one that could just as easily have happened in the USA had the Nazis won.

Dudley Nichols' script is a surprisingly intelligent look at the nature of collaboration and the self-righteous moral delusion of the Vichy Government that justified a baser mercenary self-interest. Walter Slezak's Nazi isn't an obvious stereotype, more a pragmatic idealist rather than a fanatic - a true believer, but one who doesn't want the situation in the ... Read More:

Dr. Noah Praetorius (Cary Grant) a doctor and teacher believes in holistic medicine and uses unconventional ways. A fellow doctor and teacher (Hume Cronyn) has a nasty attitude and is jealous, so he plans to take Praetorius down a notch. Mean while back at the ranch Dr. Praetorious is getting romanticlay involved with a young student that has a problem that she can not reveal to her father.

Mr. Shunderson is a mysterious person from Noah’s past. You may think that Shunderson "the bat" is scary.

This movie is a remake of "Frauenarzt Dr. Prätorius" (1950). Luckily it is much better than the original. Watching the train scene made me want to go "beep beep" or was that "beep beep beep?" This is one of those movies that ... Read More:

DVD : Black Beauty (1971)
I agree with the comments of Ms J.A.Jacobs about this film bearing little resemblance to its source material, the novel, but it does have a few fine things going for it. Firstly, there is the angelic and totally beautiful Mark Lester, who was 12 years old when he made this film in 1970 (it was released in 1971) and he dominates the film, even though, despite being the main star of it, he's only in the film for the first 26 minutes and is glimpsed again briefly as the end cast plays. He is fascinating to watch and his facial expressions and the look in his eyes when he is watching Black Beauty being born are a joy to behold and are complemented superbly by the music score composed by Lionel Bart and John Cameron.

After Mark leaves the film, ... Read More:
