Wagner - Tristan Und Isolde (Barenboim)

For me this production by Pierre Chereau of Tristan has no weaknesses and is a great achievement.

Ian Storey (Tristan) is an English singer working on the continent who was suddenly catapulted into the role of Tristan (he had never seen the opera) at La Scala in one of the most important productions of recent years, learning the role in an incredibly short period. The result is a very impressive performance, although up until the Act 11 Love duet it feels somewhat a work in progress, however from then on he finds his feet and all is fine.

Waltaud Meier is at the top of her game, and with Matti Salinen as King Marke and a fine Kuwenal in Gerd Grochkowski, and a very ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite films. And now, finally, it has been released on DVD.

The DVD was released by the German arm of Warner Bros Home Video, which means the packaging and menus are all in German, but of course you can select English as the spoken language (German being the default). The only small drawback in this is that in the few (very funny) Hungarian exchanges you do not get English subtitles (whereas if you were watching it in German you do indeed get German subtitles for those bits of dialogue). Shame.

I was a bit apprehensive when I received the DVD from Amazon.de and noticed the sticker, "NICHT DIGITALLY REMASTERED". The transfer isn't fantastic, but the picture quality is more than tolerable, certainly ... Read More:

Parsifal - Wagner [2005]

Nikolaus Lenhoff has excelled himself in this production, retaining a traditional atmosphere in the stage sets and costumes but adding modern overtones, the asteroid embedded in the monastery wall, the bullet holes in the stonework, debris, and the knights clad in shabby uniforms reminiscent of trench warfare in WW1.

The Gurnemanz of Matti Salminen is a wise traditionalist holding the disparate characters together, with Waltraud Meier giving extraordinary depths to the enigmatic Kundry.

Christopher Ventris as Parsifal takes us through the journey from pure fool to enlightenment. Also his new knowledge is the catalyst for a transition from past to a new future, symbolised by Parsifal and ... Read More:

This is a lovely production - Alagna and Mattila are really on top form. The staging and lighting is very attractive. But, it is has to be said that this is a very lugubrious opera and sometimes one just has enough of Verdi continuously moaning (musically!) and one just yearns for the infectious delight of Mozart!

I've owned this performance for some years, firstly on video and then on DVD, and have always found it a disappointment, especially in comparison to Levine's marvellous "Ring" and outsanding "Meistersinger" from the NY Metropolitan Opera. From the prelude to Act 1 the music seems to drag, and key moments do not come to life. The Klingsor's kingdom lacks its otherworldly quality here, and the Good Friday Music does not bring its usual magic. This lack of passion transmits itself to the singers and chorus and seems to last throughout the opera.

A number of critics have blamed Levine's slow tempos for the malaise. I don't think this is the explanation. For example, although the prelude to Act 1 lasts 14 minutes here compared to 12 minutes for Knappertsbusch ... Read More:

Unless you like the sort of opera productions where much time is spent on the pointless moving around of chairs I would avoid this at all costs. Cannot think of a single reason to watch it again -thank goodness I only rented it from Amazon and I have all my wonderful CD versions of this opera to listen to. Even the marvellous acoustic of the National Theatre in Munich is not caught very well, which would have at least been something to be said for this DVD.
