I don't think this is a technically brilliant film. I don't think it deserved the best picture Oscar ahead of either The Graduate or Bonnie and Clyde. (Nor did anyone else at the time. Personally I think the latter film is the best product of the three, although The Graduate is easily my favourite.) I think there must have been a bit of politics being played here by the Academy, in showcasing a film with just the right message for its time. It has good things in it, the best being Rod Steiger in an 'I'll show you what real acting is' kind of mood. Really, this was set up to be Poitier's film, but for me he doesn't get a look in, Mr. Steiger is in such hot form: One of the all time great movie performances, this. Pretty good photography, very ... Read More:

The Invisibles is a series about two friends Maurice Riley (Anthony Head - Buffy The Vampre Slayer, Doctor Who) and Syd Woolsey (Warren Clarke - Dalziel And Pascoe)who were members of "The Invisibles" the best robbers in town. They are joined by the son of the 3rd Invisible Hedley (Dean Lennox Kelly). Trying to stay on the straight and narrow they are forced to do one "final" job - but things don't go as smoothly as planned.

The cast are excellent and have a good on screen chemistry. Jenny Agutter (Spooks, An American Werewolf In London) is superb as Maurice's wife who is determined that he goes straight. The shows premise is basically "New Tricks" only with ex cons rather than ex coppers and the result is just as entertaining.

If I'm commenting on the film I would have to say it's wonderful. I've always loved it, probably because of the music, scenery and it's a perfect way to spend a couple of hours.
If I'm commenting on the product, it was so annoying to have an intermission in the middle. What's the thinking behind that? It may not bother most people but it really irritated me. If I'd wanted a break I would pause it when I wanted. I sold my DVD and will probably buy a video. That's the only reason for the low score.

Among the stars of this first-rate high tech action thriller is Blue Thunder, a helicopter that, as one character says, can fire 4,000 rounds a minute and peer down blouses at 1,000 feet. At first glance, Blue Thunder is a marvel; it has night vision capability, whisper action engines, high sensitivity mikes, automatic firepower linked to the movements of the pilot's helmet and sophisticated targeting systems. It's heavily armored and heavily armed. When Officer Frank Murphy (Roy Scheider) a chopper pilot with the Los Angeles police who has bad memories of Viet Nam, is chosen to test out the helicopter, he and his partner, Richard Lymangood (Daniel Stern), find themselves up to their eyes in a secret government conspiracy where people are going to die.

Murphy has nightmares ... Read More:

This is a film to be thoroughly enjoyed with the family after a good Sunday lunch.

Leon (Davenport) is a hard boiled fixer employed by an unscrupulous property developer and is tasked to buy off a law suite from Natalie (McIntosh) whose husband was killed due to equipment in a dangerous condition.

However Leon did not count on Natalie being a gypsy, and to conduct the negotiations tracks her down to a mountainous region where she is having a holiday with her daughter in a traditional Gypsy caravan. This provides some lovely scenic shots.

Leon ensnares himself with Natalie and the delightful comedy unfolds at a natural gentle pace.

Davenport and McIntosh create exactly the right chemistry, and the acting of their daughters Tania (Lumley) and Sarah ... Read More:

DVD : Destination Tokyo [1944]
Standard 1944 sub movie with the correct mixed crew. They meet with the standard trials and tribulation.

The added pluses for this film are getting to go to Tokyo. There they are to sneak into the hills and give directions to the Mitsubishi plant. (Using the Japanese language). Mean while back at the ranch appendix looms its ugly head and they have to improvise interments.

Before you start getting blasé see how well the actors carry it off.

Will they be traced down in the hills?
Will the sub leave without them?
Can the sub get out undetected?
And is it over when the planes fly?

DVD : Devil Ship Pirates [1964]
The Devil-Ship Pirates is an entertaining pirate romp from Hammer that's a part of studio legend. Hammer built a Spanish pirate ship for the film planning to reuse it on other pictures. Unfortunately, it was a death trap - the woodwork was so bad the decks would give way under people's feet and it was so unseaworthy that even in calm landlocked waters the thing would capsize, nearly drowning cast and crew. Things got so bad that even the parsimonious Hammer burnt it for real in the final scenes!

The film itself isn’t as good as the story behind it, but it’s a neat premise – the crew of Christopher Lee’s Spanish privateer convince a small village that the Spanish Armada defeated the British to give them time to make repairs – well executed ... Read More:
