The 2002/2003 Forsyte Saga version of John Galsworthy's novels, starring Damian Lewis, Gina McKee, Amanda Root, Colin Redgrave and Rupert Graves, is a Granada and WGBH Boston co-production. Although, many would label the series a remake of the 1967 BBC version, it is not. This is a free adaptation of Galsworthy's three novels and two interludes (The Man of Property, Indian Summer of a Forsyte, In Chancery, Awakening and To Let). The saga chronicles the lives of an upper-middle-class British family, from the beginning of the 19th century to the 1930s. Directed by Andy Wilson, produced by David Boulter and Sita Williams and adapted by Kate Brooke and Phil Woods, the Forsyte saga is definitively a saga that shakes things up. In two discs and ten ... An apparently wicked 10 year old boy is released from an institution for allegedly killing his younger sister, and, once ensconced in the middle class family home, the film explores the tensions between him and the family's Nanny... Is he really evil or is there something about the nanny we (or his parents) don't know? Bette Davis is superb as the sinister Nanny,in a performance remisnicent of her roles in 'Whatever happened to Baby Jane' and 'Hush hush sweet Charlotte.' And Wendy Craig is effective as the neurotic, dependent mother. But perhaps the best performance is the young Seth Holt's as the troubled boy, Joey. This is a great Hammer film and a rejoinder to its detractors, proof that the studio could produce well scripted quality thrillers besides ... Read More:

On the plus side Acorn's set of the "complete" Butterflies is relatively complete (unlike the recent The Good Life collection) and contains a good transfer of the four seasons of this seminal TV show. The transfer of the show (which ran from 1978-1983) looks quite good despite its age. There is also an interesting, informative, if too brief interview with Butterflies creator Carla Lane.

On the downside viewers can access the episodes only via a Play All function. There are no links to specific episodes and this is quite annoying. Additionally, the set does not contain the 13 minute reunion of the cast (save for Michael Ripper) for the Beeb's Children in Need aid programme. It should. This points up once again the far too haphazard aspects of many BBC ... Read More:

I first heard about this cult film about five years ago but couldn't track it down for love nor money. After several years wait it was finally released on DVD and I settled down with a glass of red wine and a bag of kettle chips to see if it was worth the wait. Overall I'd say yes; Harold Pinter's screenplay depicts a confusing of traditional class roles and is given a dark undercurrent by Dirk Bogarde's creepily subservient manservant, who gradually erodes Edward Fox's ideas of class and status until the latter is a gibbering wreck and the former is in complete control. The role of Hugo Barrett exemplifies Bogarde's later roles where he got out of his comfort zone and began to play edgy as well as morally and sexually ambiguous characters to great effect. Fox is a competent ... Read More:

It's great to see this show on dvd. But it's a shame that one of the episodes called "Pound Of Flesh" has been edited. It's in a scene where Sally ( Wendy Craig) is trying to do some fitness routines to a radio show. One of the exercises had her swinging a couple of un-cooked chickens around, which of course slip out her hands. This moment has been edited out, as the song on the radio was The Sweet's song 'Funny Funny'. It looks like they couldn't get permission to use it, as at the bottom of the back cover it reads ' *for contractual reasons this episode differs from the transmitted version'.It's a shame, because it was a memorable moment of the show.

DVD : The Servant [1963] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
I first saw this film quite by accident, switching on the television on a dismal sunday afternoon. I gather I missed the first half of the film but what I did see utterly ruined my day. The big, fat, weighty emotions on the screen litterally suffocated me, made me feel quite sick and all the time I knew there was something very powerful happening there: two people, marvelously acted, caught up in a web of ugly dependance, eating at each other, until only one is left, the other ultimately assimilated into an unhealthy symbiosis-subordination.

More recently, I had the chance of seeing "The Servant" on the big screen and my hopes were very highly set. I could at last see the whole of the film and understand what had lead to the situation I knew and expected.
My impressions ... Read More:
