Please, don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting, that Boyd is dead, far from that. But Waking the Dead is dead, or dying at the very least. Usually I do not like writing negative reviews, with some exceptions, it's just I could hardly believe my own eyes reading the other reviews. So this is a different opinion for a change.

I loved Waking the Dead, I really did. I still miss Mel, I miss Frankie even more. But that is not the problem. All those "ritual killings", well, that's a question of taste, I think, personally, I never like them, as they are usually robbed of any human motivation. But even that is not the point. Trouble is, that when I start to watch a detective series, I expect some interesting case with some really interesting ... Read More:

I have watched all of the seasons of Waking the Dead through Amazons rental service which saved me from so much disapointment from current TV offering at the moment!
I did not hook into this first time around put off by Trevor Eves wooden performances and the bleak 'basement' they all seem to spend so much time in .
However having watched them now I have good opinion of him and the group of actors who weave their charm and evoke concern and interest in what happens to them. Yes I did cry when one of them is killed.
The frailty and strengths of us humans is well explored and some challenging outcomes resolving in-justice in a couple of the episodes. Not always neat endings which gives it a realistic edge.
Tops for me is the ... Read More:

Waking The Dead - Series 4 [2001]

Contemporary television drama at its best, although I have not seen all the seasons I feel certain this must be the best, if they come any better than this, WOW.

There is a wonderful atmosphere maintained throughout the season, every complex plot is a well acted and a stunning success, even if there are occasional unlikely coincidences, etc

Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd (Trevor Eve) and psychologist and profiler Grace Foley (Sue Johnson) both well into middle age lead the very much younger team of DI Jordan (Wil Johnson), DS Mel Silver (Claire Goose) and pathologist /forensic scientist Frankie Wharton (Holly Aird).
What makes it stand out against other series (i.e. the American ... Read More:

I only caught up with Waking the Dead by seeing a couple of repeats, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I hadn't seen any of series 2.

Yes, I enjoyed it, but with reservations. It's slick and the characterisation is good. As for the plots, well that's another thing. Part of the fun of the genre is that you have to think, but I'm now getting used to the fact that the reason why I'm lost is not because the writing is clever, but because there are too many things about the storylines that simply do not add up. I watched 'Thin Air' last night and I'm still reeling from the absurdity of it all.

I hope that they spent as much money on a team of writers for series 3 as they did on star actors in series 2.

Top marks to Frankie though, as always. ... Read More:

I've bought seasons 1-3. The first season I liked it but the boss guy annoyed the hell out of me. I'm afraid he hasn't improved in seasons 2 and 3. He just seems to be a complete arse and I have no sympathy or connection with the character. The science is great and the storylines are pretty cool too ... but I keep wanting to smack the boss bloke in the chops.

Unusual for John Thaw to play such a slimy git as this character is at the beginning of the film but he does it brilliantly and the changes he goes through are believable and poignant. The little girl is just magic. What an amazing young actress! The dynamios are well-scripted and the characters are not quite what you expect. A very entertaining, heartwarming and almost magical story of growing up and learning to give.

I bought this video because I read the sleeve and noticed that the writer (no relation) shared the same surname as me. I also think John Thaw is a marvellous actor. In the film, he plays estate agent Harry Jenkins, a greedy old racist who suddenly discovers that his daughter has died, leaving him a mixed-race granddaughter that he didn't know he had. From the outset, the little girl barges her way into his heart and forces him to question his life-long prejudices. I generally hate tearjerkers, but this one was witty enough to win me over. A genuine treat.
