This landmark film is let down on DVD by an unsympathetic transfer from a less than wonderful print which jiggles about during the titles and betrays a lot of grain, scratches, and other flaws. As noted, the non-anamorphic picture doesn't help - you have to "zoom in" to get the picture to fill your screen - although the sound is pretty good and the extras are excellent.

The Blu-Ray release is on 1st December 2008, and we should end up with a much better-looking picture. It deserves no less.

I have every film adapted from John Grisham's novels except for The Gingerbread man, without a shadow of a doubt this is at best an okay film, it does not even begin to touch A time to kill, The Client, Runaway jury or The Chamber and whilst not being blown away by either The Rainmaker nor The Pelican brief, they are both comfortably better films than this.

The film lacks the power, conviction and the direction of all of those films listed.

An excellent cast with 2 of my favourite actors in Gene Hackman and Tom Cruise, but even they are not at their best by some way, the only reason why Tom Cruise stands out is due to his being on screen for most of the film, Gary Busey is barely in the film, maybe a couple of minutes ... Read More:

I fell into the trap after buying this of thinking it gay propaganda thus ignoring the pleasure of watching a warm, fun film for nearly 18 months. Don't make the same mistake. The majority of films are meant to be entertainment first otherwise we wouldn't bother with them.

The behaviour of the class after Cameron's decalration at the Oscars to ther teacher (Kevin Kline) is fairly good and Kline's attempt to deny what he is classic in the body language. Bob Newhart as the headteacher is perfect hesitant and clearly somewhat homophobic boss. The highs and lows of the emotional turmoil mixed with some great comic moments works well. Tom Selleck as the reporter is a gem, especially when he forces a kiss on Kline and tells ... Read More:

Mighty good drama depicting corruption in the justice department intending, on the surface, to solve a crime, but, beneath the waters, to further political careers. Sally Field played the self centered, self deluded reporter perfectly against Newman's confused, angry victim.

The plot takes some unexpected turns but develops logically and clearly with just enough suspense to keep viewers entranced. When concluded you realize how all elements of the plot are kept within reasonable bounds and how refreshing that is. Here's a film that relies on character development and an intriguing plot with an important message. No special effects, gore and bedroom scenes needed to make this a great movie.

Both these movies are pure escapeism, well acted and very emotional in places. They don't make movies like these any more, the movie makers of today have lost the plot i'm afraid.

If you love the Star Wars films you will probably love this DVD. Following the adventures stranded Humans and friendly Ewoks, this is a good combination of action and fantasy. It was made from the last popular Star Wars film as a really popular way of meeting the Ewoks and their lives and apart from being TV films it is still great and worth watching.

Bronson is and remains my all-time favorite actor. Although not all of his movies were GREAT, this one can be referred to as one of his best and most suspenseful.
Bronson plays a cop, tracking down an intelligent homicidal killer he cannot frame because he has a tight alibi, Bronson himself breaks the law by planting evidence. This backfires though, leaving him nothing but to turn vigilante. And though you know what is going to happen, this film remains suspenseful till the very end.
Gene Davis is a worthy adversary - one you really love to hate - not your average dumb-ass killer. Don't find that too often either. ONE OF THE BEST THRILLER EVER MADE.

DVD : The Natural [1984]
A true masterpiece of simplicity. Like the paper-clip, a Jackson Pollock or the unfortunate 9/11 attacks. Their ridiculous simplicity is what elates and devastates with such extra vigour. The more base the premise, the harder the impact. Any complexity would be to confuse what is essentially happening here, the unearthing of an oft hidden raw human emotion. An emotion far to complex to convey in words but as rewarding as watching this great cast act out this simple story.
If you ever forget what it is in life that you're after or how to go about it, whether it is love, success, or just basic happiness, this film reminds and installs in us how to maybe, just maybe go about it. A very rare feat for a story based around what for me, and for most internationally I'm sure, is a ... Read More:

'The China Syndrome' looks 30 years later almost as intense and vibrant as it was when it was first released just days prior to a major nuclear accident in the US.

The film has all the ingredients of a classic: fantastic acting by Lemmon, Fonda and Douglas; a first-class script; able directing by James Bridges; and finally a compelling storyline about a topic that concerns us all.

A true late 70's classic and a clarion call for all those concerned about the risks of nuclear technology.

If you don't want to read the following review - Here's the short version -

Cocoon is great!

- for those of you that do, read on...

Cocoon is so well known that I think it's pointless to recount the plot, although what there is of it is faintly nonsensical (involving OAP's, aliens and Steve Guttenburg). What makes this film great however, is the wonderfully warm and enthusiastic interplay between the old cronies - Hume Cronyn, Wilford Brimley, Jessica Tandy and Don Ameche all turning in excellent performances.

Ron Howard's sci-fi tale is engaging, sweet and funny leaving you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
