"Bourbon, straight, with a bourbon chaser." That's Johnny Morrison's drink. Johnny's just been discharged from the Navy, along with two of his pals who were under his command. There's George Copeland (Hugh Beaumont), easy going and loyal, and Buzz Wancheck (William Bendix), big and burly, just as loyal to Johnny as George is, with a metal plate in his head, a variable memory and who sometimes goes into rages.

Johnny leaves his two pals in a Los Angeles hotel and goes to The Cavendish Court in the evening to meet his wife, Helen (Doris Dowling). The Cavendish is a high priced hotel with private bungalows, a careless attitude about parties and an aging security man who doesn't mind taking a few under-the-table dollars for various ... What would you do if you were stuck in a lifeboat with a hodgepodge of people and limited supplies? Does this sound like one of those corporate games? Well watch this movie and see how close you come to this fascinating Hitchcock (John Steinbeck story adapted by Jo Swerling) tale. Shot in monochrome adds to the hopeless feel.

It is WWII and a ship is torpedoed and its lifeboats are shot at. Before they went down they dispatched the dastardly U-Boat.

Now an only remaining Lifeboat is being loaded one at a time with a self-centered female journalist (Tallulah Bankhead), a boisterous businessman (Henry Hull), the radio ship's operator, a timid nurse, a ship's steward, a wounded sailor (William Bendix), and an overbearing ... Read More:

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with the only other reviewer of this film.
To me its what was known in the U.K. many years ago as a "B" film, yes your right Ladd wasn't much of an actor but then come to that neither was Lake they both seemed wooden and why film going audiences considered Lake a star I don't know she wasn't even good looking! The only decent actor in it was Bendix maybe because he had an easy part to play a "psycho".I just kept waiting for him to say "its that monkey music".The film itself well two guys have a thing for each other one the boss the other the hit guy ,they also have a thing for a woman (Lake) who plays both along, lots of corruption as I suppose was common in those days in America. A few fights a bit of torture ... Read More:

DVD : A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court/The Emporer Waltz (REGION 1) (NTSC)
The adaptation of Mark Twain's book "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" to the screen left in the fun parts of the story and took out all the point of the book. The book contains many lessons and thoughts that did not make it into the movie. However the movie is fun to watch and can be quite funny.
An auto mechanic and inventor Hank (Bing Crosby) is transported back to A.D. 528 with his almanac. After realizing where he is, he uses his wits and knowledge of the future to survive. He has many adventures. He helps a King (Cedric Hardwicke) to understand his people, overcomes a tyrant and finds a loyal friend (William Bendix). Naturally being Bing there is music and incantations to blot out the sun. Eventually there is true love Alisande (Rhonda ... Read More:

Can a great looking Forties noir with a clever, complicated plot overcome a hero who is a bland actor, not believable as a tough guy, and dialogue that sounds like a parody of Raymond Chandler? The answer? Yes, but just barely. Note that elements of the plot are discussed.

Brad Galt (Mark Stevens) has just started over as a private eye in New York City. He left the West Coast after serving two years for manslaughter in a setup by his partner, Tony Jardine (Kurt Kreuger). Jardine was a smoothie who played women like dice in a crap game. Galt discovered Jardine was blackmailing some of their clients and called him on it. Jardine got away free and Brad got two years. Jardine is in New York, too, still playing the blackmail game, still indulging in ... Read More:

This sweet and old-fashioned offering from the lovely Deanna Durbin is very much a film of another time. A simple and liesurely paced film about a small town girl going to the big city shortly after her father's passing, there is a sweet innocence to both the humor and the love story that should not be confused as lightweight. Based on a screenplay by the great Preston Sturges, the story really gets going slowly and Deanna carries the first portion of this film on her considerable charm. By the end, you'll be smiling, glad you stuck around for a film that remains true to its intent.

Deanna is Louise Dinglebusher(!), a girl from the small town of Cobleskil not sure what to expect from the city of New York. Eating on a budget after landing a job as an ... Read More:

Taken for what it is this movie isn't half bad. In many ways it is quite an accomplishment since it features a historical campaign that was fought only a year before and was a hard won victory for the US armed forces and is therefore an interesting bit of history and just the right thing for a propaganda film.

Acting is much better than in say Wake Island with giants like Anthony Quinn in leading roles. Still it has quite different production values than today and is more a movie for a war movie enthusiast than average viewers - but if you are here thats probably what you are anyway.

Generally I prefer British contemporary World War 2 movies like The Way Ahead and First of the Few but of the American movies from this time I think Guadalcanal ... Read More:
