Much is made of the factual inaccuracies of this story. In fact if you have the good fortune to read the excellent book JOLIE -THE STORY OF AL JOLSEN by Michael Freedland, the truth is not as far away as you may think. First of all the man had to have an ego do what he was doing, cope with the fame and up to a point survive. He had certain character traits that others had, a temper, meanness followed by generosity and so on that were minimised and ignored for the most part by the film. You can only tell so much of a story and maintain the interest of the watcher. Personalities devolve in to composite characters and so on. Like for most mature vocalists, the music has to be several steps lower as the range changes with age. As with Sinatra and ... Read More:

I bought this for our UK Playstation 3 simply because it gets good write-ups for the hi-def transfer and I like the theme song, although I'd never seen it before. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable films I've seen in a long time. The colours are bright and cheerful, most of the songs are catchy and Ann-Margret is just great to watch. What I like most is that she really seems to be enjoying herself throughout the film, particularly in the dance scenes. My favourite scene was the What'd I Say routine, where Ann-Margret just seems to be having a whale of a time. We watched the film in 1080i and were very impressed, especially in the close-ups. Even the neon scenes of the Strip looked very clear, with no noticeable bleeding of the colours. ... Read More:

I thought it went without saying that this is one of the most positive and entertaining films from a period with a cliched embarrassment of riches but I see it gets only a three star review.
Quiet undeserved.
See it for yourself and you won't fail to want to be more generous as the spirit of the film persuades your stingy spirit to loose the hold of meanness: that last reviewer was of a mind to give it only one star as he began writing - see what the spirit can do?

sturges indeed did god proud for creating adam with his intelligently witty script which discovered the comic genius of both sturges and fonda ,but the limelight is stolen as always by stanwyck as eve, without her it is impossible to contemplate a movie so perfect in timing and in emotional harmony with it's simple plot ,yet so profoundly rich in affect with love and comedy,

if this was the archetype of the romcom ,then i regret to say that hollywood is in stone age today compared to the forties as this works at every dimension and all the human senses are satiated besides the sense of style and intelligence .

that it does so by an impossible plot twist which does not bother you the least is due to the delicious presentation where frothy ... Read More:

MGM presents "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (9 December 1953) (98 mins/Color) (Dolby digitally remastered) -- Our story line and plot, In the Civil War, Fort Bravo is a prison camp for captured southerners --- Its isolated position and unfriendly natives make escape almost impossible, but anyone who tries is always brought back by by-the-book Captain Roper (William Holden) --- Another Captain John Marsh (John Forsythe) a Confederate and a group of prisoners hatch a plot to get away by bringing in a southern belle Carla Forester (Eleanor Parker) to distract Roper --- The plan seems to work, but the inhospitable desert, the murderous Indians, and - most importantly - the Colonel apparently wronged in love mean that this is only the start --- William Holden and John Forsythe both love ... Up there with Some Like It Hot.

Very overlooked and forgotten now, but this is a priceless gem. Daring subject matter for the 40s which is probably why this film seems fresh and undated. Watch this - you will laugh, and cry, and laugh again. They must bring this out to buy on DVD soon.

DVD : Easy Living [1937] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This 1937 movie is rated as one of the funniest screwball comedies of the thirties. Loud millionaire J.B. Ball, the always good (and always loud) Edward Arnold, tells his extravagantly aggressive wife (Mary Nash) that she cannot keep her $58,000 Sable coat. Ball throws it out of the upper window of their mansion where it happens to fall right on top of bewildered Mary Smith (Arthur), who's traveling on an open-air bus. Mary's a poor gal who works for a magazine.

The millionaire is then seen buying Mary a new hat by the town gossip and soon she gets more than just a hat: practically all of New York is at her feet. The scene where she and Milland, her love interest, wreak havoc at the now-obsolete automat is truly inspired and hilarious. The rather offbeat cast works ... Read More:

Serious students of the Lewis and Clark expedition need not get too excited about this....but the film scores well as an impressive outdoor adventure beautifully filmed in widescreen (VistaVision)colour. By modern standards the (1955) film looks somwhat dated and the not helped by non too impressive casting with neither Fred MacMurray or Charlton Heston looking really comfortable in their roles. But the sum of all the parts is good and Donna Reed looks lovely as the Shoshone indian girl Sacajawea who featured in the actual L & C expedition and provides the love interest for Clark (Charlton Heston). Starting in 1803 the film sets out to tell the tale of Lewis and Clark's expedition to map the Louisiana territory which the US had recently purchased from the French. There is some historical ...
