She's ready, but are you ready for her? In this magnificent film, Billy Wilder bites the hands that feeds him. Gloria Swanson dazzles as desperate, faded silent movie star Norma Desmond, who is trying to claw her way back to the top after years of seclusion in her Hollywood mansion on Sunset Boulvard. However, her time has been and gone, and at fifty years old, this seems impossible. When Joe Gillis (Holden), an equally desperate screenwriter, happens upon her mansion while fleeing some debt collectors, he finds the perfect way to make some money by using Norma. However, will he be able to escape her wrath when she discovers the truth? After all, in the immortal words of Desmond, "No-one ever leaves a star, that's what makes one a star....."

It could have been a great film. It had all it needed to be a masterpiece. It debunked the old traditional boring television of our great grand parents, that television that was speaking all the time in order to bring us the truth, to teach us the true truth, to make us believe every word they said was absolutely inspiring and we had to be thankful and grateful for this new medium to be so effective in teaching us, in lifting us out of our ignorance. They treated television as a super book, an encyclopedia and they had not understood the slightest smallest element of what this medium was. They had not read Marshall McLuhan and when they had heard of him they thought he was trite, insignificant and purely ranting and raving. And they were going ... Read More:

If that was a film of duty and bravery, the only characters who meet both demands, were British commandos of 316. All other lines seem to be unrealistic. The facility that was depicted in the movie, is not a forced labor, but rather a holiday camp. Japanese staff had all possibilities to force POWs do whatever work, but Japs don't even tried, simply observing sabotage and malingering. British officers surrender, carry conference with the enemy, build the bridge for the enemy and even celebrate on this occasion. There is neither bravery nor duty here. Colonel Saito was right that they carry no shame - and this can be (and is underscored in the film?) the virtue of the Western man - to act dishonestly and still bear no shame, even claiming to have right ... I was lucky enough to get this dvd collection recently on a wet saturday morning via Amazon for £12. Having had the house to myself i decided to buy two bottles of wine and a few cheap cigars. I plugged my Bose Quiet Comfort headphones into the TV, and ripped into the booze with a determined intensity. I started off this marathon session with the entertaining comedy Ballad of Cable Hogue (6/10). I then played the under rated 1962 Ride the High Country (7/10), and after having watched the classic Pat Garrett (8/10), i decided to give 'The Wild Bunch' (10/10) a whirl whilst finishing the second bottle of Rioja.
That was a good saturday afternoon.
This dvd collection is a bargain at under £12 and it is loaded with extras -- Box set contains documentaries, ... Read More:

Due to an alleged stupid dispute between Warners and 20th Century Fox over who owns the UK rights to the Towering Inferno this magnificent 2 disc set is unavaible in the UK except on Region 1 import. But it is well worth the effort to get hold of one.
Beautifully packaged, with the main feature remastered and a host of fascinating extras, far to many to go into detail about on disc 2, plus a set of lobby cards, this is the ultimate Towering Inferno set and one that every fan of this classic disaster movie should own.

There is little not to like with this 50s movie. Two great actors, a renowned Director,(Henry King - Twelve o'clock High,Snows of Kilamanjaro, Carousel) a good story and a wonderful setting.
Jennifer Jones plays a Eurasian Doctor and Holden a Journalist based in Hong Kong. A romance develops and the rest is history. I'll say no more for fear of spoiling your pleasure. The movie was nominated for 8 Oscars.

The film is especially interesting in one respect in that there is much to be seen of Hong Kong as it was in the 1950s when the movie was shot on location. The city was a fully fledged British colony then, plenty of HM's Warships in the harbour and British looking officials in Town.Lots of English 'Tea Party' accents around'. Hong Kong was pretty much 'low ... Read More:

Insomnia is a good thriller thats worth buying for many reasons:

Its a top notch cast. Al Pacino gives one of his his finest late performances as the detective who can't sleep investigating a murder. Robin Williams matches Pacino in his second great role that year (see One Hour Photo for the other), and the always good Hilary Swank gives a very good performance supporting the two main leads.

The director is Christopher Nolan (Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige), who seems to have a natural talent for these type of films. He does a fine job with the actors as well as capturing the sometimes haunting nature of the Alaskan landscape. Nolan is helped by a taught script, and with a running time of less than 2 hours, you will find it difficult to sleep through. ... Read More:

I wouldn't normally write reviews as it's all so subjective. However, this was so bad I feel compelled to tell you. I wanted to turn it off after 30 minutes but persevered. It's awful.

Everybody loves a good Cinderella story, especially if it has a dash of realism and a sense of humour. And unbaked souffles.

And methinks it also helps the case if you have Audrey Hepburn as the modern Cinderella-with-a-wit, which is the strongest point in the charming little romance called "Sabrina." While the chemistry between Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart is never entirely believable, the movie is as buoyant and whimsical as a summer daydream, but with way better dialogue ("Bounce please, ladies").

Sabrina Fairchild (Hepburn) is the daughter of the chauffeur at the palatial Larabee estate. She's also in love with the ne'er-do-well second son, David (William Holden) -- and even attempts suicide after seeing him with one of his many girlfriends, although she's rescued by David's ... Read More:

"Its time we started thinking beyond our guns, those days are closing fast," muses Pike (William Holden) shortly after the bloodiest shootout in cinema history. The shootout was the result of a botched robbery attempt, and it soon descended into chaotic carnage where Pike and his titular Wild Bunch are forced to shoot their way out of an ambush, killing a good portion of civilians in the crossfire.

This classic movie was released in 1969 in response to the hugely successful gay western `Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. Butch Cassidy's huge success at the box office essentially green lit the way for Sam Peckinpah's vision of a changing wild west in The Wild Bunch.
It would be a travesty to think about The Wild Bunch in terms of its violence; it is a much better movie than that. It is indeed ... Read More:
