After Soprano's came to an end last year over here in blighty last year I was wondering would another series come along to give it a run for it's money.

I'm not sure what people think of David Chase's Mafia Epic but I can imagine cries of overrated being called out, I personally found utterly engrossing TV and simply sublime, I was somewhat sad to see it end but grateful Chase chose it to go out on high and yes I was perfectly happy with the opened ended abrupt ending to the final episode. Chase never was going to do conventional.

While I admit Showtime's Dexter started to fill that void, the 1st season was a great intro to the world of Miami's most interesting serial killer the 2nd season took the concept and ran with ... Read More:

With the 1st season setting the scene and introducing the characters the 2nd season does that rare thing of being even better, Though the story does still contains the continuing Barksdale story with Stringer Bell holding the reins as Avon alongside his nephew are incarcerated due the conclusions of the investigation in season 1. It is the new strand that drives the 2nd series even more. It introduces the tragic tale of the Sobotka's, a family of Batimore Dockers who's head Frank sometimes goes to not exactly legitimate methods to keep the money coming in but is a generous but compromised man. So when he rubs childhood adversary Deputy Commissioner Valchek up the wrong way with a incident that concerns amongst such things as Church stained glass window, ... Read More:

So far I've tended not to review films I haven't enjoyed. I find it hard to be inspired enough to write when I didn't engage or feel fulfilled at the end of a film (or even a music or book) experience. Sadly Nixon is one of the few films I've really not enjoyed and have given such a low star rating to. I know the period and subject relatively well, having studied it at college and reading around American politics since, and it is here where the film redeems itself; the research seems fairly well done. Unfortunately, considering the amazing cast assembled, I found many performances very dry and lack lustre. I just didn't engage or relate to any of them enough to care about the story. The direction was pretty good, as to be expected from Oliver Stone, but the constant flicking ... Read More:

Jean-Luc Godard said about the director of Rebel Without a Cause "Nicholas Ray is cinema."
Well now, risking Pseuds' Corner, I wager James Dean is movie stardom personified on the strength of his three great performances in these three 1950's movies. With Dean dead for more than 50 years, this boxset underlines that the only sense we have of him is on celluloid.
Brando may have been a better actor but even before that car crash ensured Deans iconic afterlife, Dean was the more complete celebrity.
Even though these movies are classics they are dated.
My only criticism is of the movie Giant. I can't help feeling it is like a 3.5 hour episode of Dallas. Watch Dean in it as he steals every scene. Genius.

ove The Rim is a fairly simplistic sports film, masquerading as a serious critique of the depressing nature of young black life in America.

This simplistic nature is painfully evident in the clichéd and predictable plot and the characterisations, with the overstated villains in particular (who always seem to wear black - subtle!) appearing very shallow and cartoonish. When an attempt is made to flesh out the backstory of one of the characters (Shep) however, it comes across as very repetitive and most of these scenes (not helped by the wooden acting from 'Leon') fall flat and damage the pacing of the film.

Most of the acting, aside from the afore-mentioned Leon, is very good, with the always exuberant Tupac and Duane Martin particularly impressive.

Well, it's up to me to save the reputation of KYTV. Some of it may seem a bit dated,
but compared to most of today's comedy (Little Britain or Catherine Tate), KYTV
(and Radio Active, the radio show it spun off) is pure comedy gold.
Great performers, especially Philip Pope! Please release Series 3 now!!

This has been done before in the Shield, but this film takes things up to another level. Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character is deeply unpleasant, but deeply unpleasant people do exist, otherwise there would be no evil in the world.

Clifton Collins Jr was terrific, playing a man going through a breakdown, disgusted by what he had done and what he had become and seeking redemption in a terrible way - by betraying his partner. The agony on his face, the ghosts that haunted him, the futile attempts to put a limit on the things his partner wanted to do made this a brilliant performance

The film was chaotic, held together only by its timeframe - 8am to 6pm, but that was symbolic of the lives of the two men and the other corrupt cops. Nothing made sense any more because the lines between good ... Read More:

DVD : Paid in Full [2002] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Wood Harris and Mekhi Phifer put in solid performances but this is a familiar story. Harris plays Ace, a working man in 80s Harlem. His delivery duties lead him to stumble across a Cuban drug trafficker who senses some potential in him and sets him up as a wholesale kingpin in the neighbourhood. Ace's quiet and businesslike approach is in stark contrast to the other neighbourhood dealers and he is successful because of it. Interestingly he resisted offers from his friends to get involved in "the game" earlier. His associates include his close friend Mitch (Phifer) and his sisters abrasive boyfriend Calvin (Kevin Carrol); both face prison time for their indiscretion. Mitch returns to the streets happy two work under Ace but Calvin's jealousy is palpable. Mitch has also picked up a trigger happy enforcer named Rico (rapper ... Read More:
