Whilst this probably isn't the best western ever made its certainly up there amongst the top flight. It was fortunately made a few years before 'A Fistful of Dollars', which changed westerns and what was expected from them. Take the classic Kurosawa film 'Seven Samurai' (which is given its due in the opening credits) and reinvent it in the American west. Then add the staggeringly good cast of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach, James Coburn and Robert Vaughan and what you have is a near perfect piece of Cinema. This movie is very inaccurate and does not correspond to the events described in the Bible. Even worse than that --- they couldn't even get the names right --- e.g. Yochebed is called Jochabel etc. In the Bible God sends Moses but in the movie it is Joshua who does this first (and God merely (and seemingly reluctantly) confirms it with a barely audible voice from a shining (not burning as in the Bible) tree (not a bush as in the Bible). The list of errors is too big to mention them all here. Suffice it to say that I am surprized that even in 1956 people were so degenerate as to watch this rubbish and call it "Bible epic". It is more appropriate for the current times when people call white black and black white.

'The King and I' is a much-loved family classic because it combines catchy songs with lush sets and an endearing, entertaining storyline. Like many musicals, it is overlong (I feel that musicals work best at about a 100 minute run time) and over-the-top, but it is wonderful escapism that the whole family can enjoy. Yul Brynner won an Oscar for his turn as the King Of Siam, and he is very good in the role. English-rose Deborah Kerr plays her usual English rose role, as the live-in-governess to the King Of Siam's many, many children. Her Anna is a lovely, steadying presence to the theatrics of many other cast members (including Brynner). some pleasure-leisure robots rebel in a futuristic pleasure park and we have mayhem and carnage ,but the moralist and ethical issues to use real people as models for pleasure and sadomosochism as an acceptable social standard is very well debated in an entertaining movie ,which is a satire as well as a slick thriller ,two rare qualities together in a science fiction fantasy. yul brynner gives one of his best ever as the robotic gunslinger and he is maniacally precise in both the acting department and gun target practice too . surprisingly you feel sorry for the robots then the human victims who are the origonal tyrants ,in some ways this movie stands up for the opressed of the planet in reminding the rest that the role reversal can happen ... Please, someone who has this PAL version DVD, tell me what the Aspect Ratio is? Or just, is it Wide Screen or not? I own the NTSC DVD and it's not Wide Screen, but "Pan & Scan" Full Screen. Before I spend for this PAL version, I'd like to know. Very Much Thanks.
