Its hard to think of anything negative about these two excellent films (not going to repeat the story again-there are plenty of reviews here). However its worth noting that the slowness in the pace of these films mirrors the lives and setting of the characters portraid within. If you have the time (4 hours) and patience you see the story unfolding rather than punching you in the face! The ending is one of the best, in that it is unexpected and jaw dropping. Ignore the negativity from other reviews, pseudo experts who hint but fail to suggest of better, buy them and see for yourself, it will be money well spent

I remember watching this film when I was a kid with my motorsport addicted grandfather and didn't fully appreciate the story, cast and locations but loved the action.

I purchased the 2 disc Special Edition recently and Ive watched twice since and loved it even more now that film quality has been hugely improved on visual colour and sound quality.

I can now appreciate the film more with age, the director Zimmermann, who also directed Ronin (note the car chases), James Garner (I loved The Rockford Files), Tishiro Mifune (Im a big Akira Kurosawa fan)and now the fact that I know the circuits and locations in the film, the cars and the histories of the REAL individual F1 drivers. Pretty good as a film - but a bit po-faced. Watching it, you'd never guess that the original book is actually very funny.

"All men are guilty," says the chief of the police. "They're born innocent but it doesn't last." Add this bit of nihilism to Jean-Pierre Melville's fascination with the idea of the crook's code of honor and you have Le Cercle Rouge. This code of honor among crooks, however, is not simply a cliché; it's a figment of the imagination even when film moralists -- realistic moralists by their viewpoint, romantic moralists by most others' -- began to make movies on the subject. Their theme is that it isn't what one does, but how one does it. We most often wind up with stories all about experienced men with their own sense of honor, stories where fate, fatalism and the code run things.

For most of humanity, except screen writers and movie directors, this would ... Read More:

The Wages of Fear is a magnificent thriller, the last hour-and-a-half of which will have you chewing your nails up to your wrists. The first hour is interesting but, to my mind, a bit slow. We spend a lot of time getting to know the squalor of Las Piedras. The anti-American point of view now just seems quaint.

Las Piedras is a tiny South American (or possibly Central American) town that reeks of poverty and bakes in the hot sun. Children with sores, tired donkeys and mangy dogs fill the dirt streets. It's the final stop for down-and-outers whose only hope is to find work with the Southern Oil Company (you can infer SOC easily is a stand-in for Standard Oil), which dominates the place. "Americans here? You kidding?" says one man. "If there's oil around they're not ... Read More:

This is my favorite Barbra movie and, because of the topic, one of my favorite movies of all time. What gets left out of most reviews is that it is a fun romp through the subject of reincarnation. As such, it has some witty and contemporary (for the year it was made, 1970) dialogue about the subject and plot twists that reincarnation might generate. That being said, it has some incredibly lovely songs by Ms. Streisand, the most fun being "Go To Sleep". That song wins my vote because it shows Babs on a split screen so she ends up singing a trio with herself as the two backup singers. What's better than two Babs? Three! I also love "The Banquet Of Love" and find myself singing it while I am cooking. Yes, even today; 38 years later. It is a lovely song. And, since my sister in law is ... Read More:

Le Corbeau aka The Raven is a surprisingly vivid piece of film-making, a wonderfully cinematic dissection of a town torn apart by the poison-pen letters of 'The Raven.' The initial balance of power that maintains the status quo (A knows B's indiscretion, B knows A's, so neither can destroy the other without disgracing himself) is soon destroyed as the whole town learns each other's dirty linen, with suspicions, half-truths and outright lies soon lead to the town turning on each other in the search for a scapegoat. Tragedy, suicide and murder inevitably follow...

This, of course, was the film that earned Clouzot a lasting reputation as a collaborator - made for the infamous German Continental films, it was attacked by both the Nazis for discouraging the French from informing ... Read More:

DVD : Wages Of Fear [1952]
This is one of my favourite foreign language films. A true masterpiece of suspense, nerve-jangling tension, excitement with a cool French existentialist philosophy underpinning it all. The Wages of Fear would certainly be a contender in my Top Ten films ever made.

BUT, please don't waste your money on this DVD of the film. The print that was used is in a shocking condition. It is dirty, out of focus, creaky, and the subtitles are so faint they are barely readable. I think it was a disgrace to release a DVD in this condition at all. Without doubt it is worse than VHS, in fact the copy I have, taped off the TV about ten years ago is MUCH better even now. I had hoped to replace it with a sharp DVD edition, but this was a complete waste of money.

As well as the technical ... Read More:

Been wanting to watch MM's films and this box set fitted the bill. Packaged very nicely but the box seems to be made from paper mache as it tends to fray very easily. Loads of special features with the films. Excellent.
