DVD : Hans Christian Andersen [1952]
I first saw this film when I was a child and never forgot the wonderful, melodious music. Fifty years on, Frank Loesser's score is just as good. The rest of the film, however, doesn't hold up as well.

Danny Kaye can usually be depended on to turn in a good performance, but here he seems to be half asleep. His acting, and that of his associates, lacks vitality. The obviously artificial scenery and studio sets does nothing to dispel the rather languid mood. But the ballet sequences are effective and rather interesting, considering this is a film for children.

'Hans Christian Andersen' is a product of its time, so if you're nostalgic for the old films and hummable tunes, this one's worth watching.
