Elizabeth (Kim Bassinger) works at an art gallery in New York City. She meets John (Mickey Rourke), a mysterious, wealthy stranger, and they begin a torrid affair. He's into game playing; he likes to tell her what to do and she does it, even when it scares her. He wants to control her completely and she lets him, for nine and a half weeks.

When this came out in 1986, it was considered shocking; today one can see almost this much sensuality on TV and certainly in many movies, so its impact has diminished. The steamy, dangerous, erotic night scenes contrast nicely with the cold, sterile day scenes of Elizabeth's work. The photography is striking with costumes and sets in shades of black and white and close-ups designed to heighten ... Read More:

The acting and storyline are fantastic.

For once, a Hollywood film which parts from Hollywood story conventionality. There is no hero, no bad guy, no good guy, and no happy ending.

There is some brilliant acting, great filming, pretty good sex scenes (can't knock that), and an ambiguous end.

OK, anyone familiar with modern detective shows will know that the police bit is full of holes - the police would definitely have found and convicted the people they needed to (I won't say more, as I don't want to spoil).

But though the brilliant acting owes everything to Hollywood, the other good things about the film owe everything to its French origins.

All in all, a great film, which stands ... Read More:

Kubrick's 1962 film hardly managed to hint at the real sordidness that surely comes with such an affair at the centre of this story, and hardly touched on the inner turmoil of professor Humbert. While Kubrick was very restricted in what sort of movie he could make, which more or less decided the wry, lightly satirical tone of his movie, Lyne of course was afforded much more licence to get to the nitty gritty of the story and make it more graphic and more intense, in other words more realistic. He indeed goes for a very intense and vivid narrative, and naturally enough the satirical side, a thing which was an instrinsic part of the novel, is brushed aside completely. With such a full on depiction of their relationship it would have been very difficult ... Read More:

A white-knuckled "don't-let-this-happen-to-you" thriller that vividly demonstrates what can happen to a guy when he lets other parts of his anatomy do his thinking for him.
Manhattan lawyer Dan Gallagher (Douglas) has it all: successful career, attractive wife, loving daughter. So why not have an extramarital fling with a woman he met at a party while the family is out of town? Sure. Just a one-night stand. No harm, no foul. But there's something very "foul" about Dan's partner in crime, because blonde Alex Forrest (Glenn Close) may have all the right moves in the sack, but she also has an elevator that doesn't go all the way to the top. So when Dan wants to shake hands and part company, Alex will have none of it, and the table is set for a one-way ticket ... Read More:

Director Adrian Lyne is one of those Auteurs who dredge up mixed feelings amongst cinemaphiles. Better known for his psychosexual dramas such as "Fatal Attraction" (Good) and "9 1/2 Weeks" (Utterly dire), Lyne somehow managed to get his paws on Bruce Joel Rubin's script and put his own sheen upon it.. And surprise surprise, it's rather good in all respects. From it's opening scene the movie reaches for the same heights as holier-than-thou movies such as "The China Syndrome" and "Coming Home" and almost reaches them - at least manages to touch their coattails.

The story revolves around tortured Vietnam Vet Jacob Singer(played with gusto by Tim Robbins)and his attempts to uncover what exactly the US Army did to his mind during a NVA offensive... faced ... Read More:

9 and 1/2 Weeks is a good movie made by a great director. Showgirls is a silly, fun movie.
Wild Orchid is easily the worst movie i have ever seen. No joke. It is laugh out loud bad. As a M.Rourke and a 9 1/2 weeks fan I am astonished that Rourke and the once famous Jacqueline Bisset (Bullitt- S.McQueen) appeared in this soft porn, badly made movie.

Director Zalman King's should have been arrested for crimes against Cinema-goers after the movie's release. Rourke stars as an aloof gazillionaire named Wheeler who longs for the human touch. Carre Otis is Emily,a naive, virginal American high-flying Lawyer who knows six languages (but can't act) and Jacqueline Bisset is Emily's scheming mother Claudia. It's set in the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro. ... Read More:
