This is far from dross, as one reviewer suggests! It is a classic drama, with strong characters and good acting. It is realistic, and exciting. I recommend it to all with an interest in football hooligans.

This is a great film right from the start when it kicks in with the jagged chords of The Exploited's 'UK82'. The acting is really good, although the language and content is definately not suitable for Mary Whitehouse followers (to hell with that lot anyway!!). The film doesn't have an ending in the usual sense, letting the viewer make up their own mind as to what happens next. This isn't a cheerful film but it does pose some interesting questions and each viewer will respond differently towards Trevor the anti-hero. Even if you're not British, this is a powerful film to watch - the facial expressions alone make this a film worth viewing!

This set of the BBC original and the cinema release is well worth getting. The excellent and informative commentary on the TV original has the TV producer plus Phil Daniels and David Threlfall (the original Archer, tied into an RSC contract during the time of the remake). All the ins and outs of the TV ban are dealt with both during the commentary and in a separate interview with the producer, but of especial note among the extra is the interview with Roy Minton who is remarkably frank about Clarke's attempts to rewrite the script without Minton's involvement for the film - it ended their close relationship - and about his own subsequent falling out of favour with TV bosses.

I had only seen clips of the cinema film before viewing these ... Read More:

Bex (Gary Oldman) is an estate agent and loving familly man by day. He is also the leader of the Inter City Crew, a violent gang of football supporters, who enjoy brutal encounters with rival gangs on match days. Bex decides that the European Championships offer some very interesting possibilities.

Gary Oldman is chillingly convincing in the main role of a film which pulls no punches at all. Graphic battles with knives, hammers and baseball bats contributed to many attempts to ban this controversial film.

Yet despite all this, this powerful and disturbing drama will keep most glued to the screen.

DVD : The Firm/Elephant [1988]
This was THE first and in my view the only genuine attempt to portray the real mindset and culture of football hoologanism in Britain. The story line is realistic and convincing and the fight scenes are compelling. What is real value is the rationale of a man who transforms his traditional family life, midweek to his other "family" and true inner self on match days.

The film does not glorify violence but is a legitimate attempt to explain the powerful influence of peer and social pressures to 'belong'. The end of the film sends a clear message that such power has a proven ability to infiltrate society.

A truly brilliant performance from Oldman and a highly influential film

A really dark production showing the underbelly of Thatcher's Britain. Trevor, a law breaking & serial offending skinhead with racist (indeed, selectively & often contradictory, racist) views, works his way through the judicial system,as his behaviour & offences worsten.
Trevor isn't without a degree of intelligence (even cunning) but he is angry (indeed his anger seems to border on mental illness) & lives the the stereotypical existence of a right wing skin, with alife of glue sniffing, racial hatred, theft, vandalism & defiance of authority.
This film is very powerful & its potency increases,as we see Trevor descending into a spiral which will ultimately lead to a confrontation with the police, authority & the establishment which ... Read More:
