All The President's Men (2 Disc Special Edition) [1976]Another one of my Dad's favorite movies. He was in college during the Watergate Scandal and followed it thoroughly. I saw the movie from his collection. The EXCELLENT FILM is based on the story of two reporters for the Washington Post, Carl Bernstein(Dustin Hoffman) and Robert Woodward(Robert Redford), who stumbled across a potential lead for a story that snow-balled, to their continued horror, to the incrimination of and forced resignation of President, Richard Nixon. Fed by the mysterious "Deep Throat", Bernstein and Woodward put their own pieces together, sold two and a half million copies of the Post and won a Pulitzer Prize. The script by William Goldman and based on Bernstein's and ... Read More:

I've always loved this film, I had it on tape for years. It's a great story, intelligent, with superb acting. Other reviews say it all

What did annoy me was that the DVD is two-sided. You have to watch half the film, then turn the DVD over to watch the other half. This isn't going to be enough to irritate everybody but it really irrited me, and I really wouldn't have bought it if I'd known about the format.

I'm the lazy type who likes to settle down, surrounded by food, and not get up again until the film is finished and there's no food left. Like I said, not going to bother everybody but still worth knowing.

DVD : Parallax View, The [1974]
The Parallax View is the second of Alan Pakula's conspiracy trilogy concluding after Klute in 1971.

Starring Warren Beatty as Joseph Fraddy, a young, ruthless newspaper journalist, where he witnesses like every one else, an assantation on a newly promoted Senate, where gradually, the witnesses start to commit suicide one by one, leaving him the only witness unharmed by this procedure and is determined to find out what "really" is going on...

The View may seem ragged in it's approach, a slow thriller which never explains in a simple manner. The Paradox View may also look dated, if you don't understand or appreciate the assanation obbession period in the middle 1970s and the conspirary theories behind Watergate where secret business ... As a child in Ireland, Frankie McGuire (Brad Pitt) sees his dad gunned down for his involvement with the Irish Republican Army (IRA). As an adult, McGuire has followed in his dad's footsteps. When the IRA decides it needs more firepower, they hatch a plan that involves McGuire going to the United States to pick up a shipment of Stinger missiles. Through American IRA contacts, McGuire adopts a false identity and housing is arranged with a non-involved Irish family headed by New York City cop Tom O'Meara (Harrison Ford).

There is an impression that The Devil's Own is an action film. The Internet Movie Database has it listed as "Action/Drama/Thriller". Although there are some action elements in the film, this is really a tragic drama, almost in a classical ... Read More:

A good film, a bit boring and slow to start, once half way through it gets a little more exciting but it isn't to the end where you find out who really killed the girl...

DVD : Sophie's Choice [1982]
This film had all the elements to be a great film of our time. A great story with a narrative full of emotion. First rate performances esp from Streep but also Kline and McNichols. For some reason however this film did not gel well together despite the fine and wonderful performance there is an element of humanity lacking from the film. Streep's performance is superb and totally deserved her Oscar but by the end of the film I felt I had been cheated. Given the acting talent this film had going for it the whole package just seemed like a damp squid.
It is a good film but not great.

DVD : Klute [1971] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
a womans dilemma
if moral ambiguity ever was questioned relevantly and then answered in a level headed manner then klute will be one of the best movies to have pertrayed it as it takes prostitution ,illicit surveillance and murder in the evil milieu of a morally bankrupt metropolis and turns it inside out to find a good aspect to all the resident evil ,it triumphs with fonda as the liberated call girl but also sutherland as the stubborn investigator who is prepared to go to any length to redeem himself and find the truth ,fortunately the art of the writer and the perforfermors is coherent and meets in an astonishing verisimilitude to create a timeless classic within an entertaining thriller ,a marvel of a movie with its dark ,languid ,lyrical narration which never ...
