Forget the Wire, forget the Sopranos, forget the West Wing, all of which have been called 'the greatest TV show in history'. The true deserving winner of that mantel is Mad Men. Created and produced by one of the lead writers of the Sopranos (who incidentally was hired on the back of his spec script for Mad Men), the series unsurprisingly holds the same preoccupation of that show; mainly the seedy underside of the American dream.

The true glory of this show is also what may put some viewers off. Everything which exists in the show is underplayed, every scene cariied in small moments which betray the truth of the individual characters. Everything in this show exists in sub-text. It is perhaps the first TV show ever which does not ... Read More:

After the end of Season 1, I found the first two episodes of Season 2 to be a bit boring, but by the third episode it kicks off really well. If you havent seen it you are in for a treat, without giving anything away, I thought that the best episodes were "the other 48 days" and "Dave". Can't wait to see what season 3 will be like :)

This is the seventh box set taking the excellent 'Sopranos' to it's inconclusive conclusion. The final nine episodes included here are of the same high standard as those before it and continues the build up of tension started in Season six part 1. Anybody who has watched the show and has got to this late stage in the saga will not be needing a review to decide on a purchase, you're going to buy it anyway!!. To those people it is an excellent buy. i'm just a little disappointed that the cost has remained substantially higher than all the series before it. You've got to buy it to complete the set and they know that! For this point alone i've reduced the score to four stars.

seem to have a different opinion from so many other viewers, since I really enjoyed the first half of season six. Seeing Tony get shot, not by season one's physically and mentally vigorous Uncle Junior, as I had kept anticipating that season, but by the toothless demented Uncle Junior, believing he was shooting someone else entirely was priceless irony. I loved the part with Tony in the coma in our world, while -wherever he was - he was exactly what he had always dreaded being - a nobody. Worse, he's a traveling salesman who is "trapped" and unable to get home. When Tony comes out of his coma, he vows to change and take every day as a gift, but later he is gradually pulled back into his old ways, since his position as boss really gives him no alternative.

I have not felt the need to review an amazon item before, but I'm choosing the West Wing to break my duck.

The West Wing is the best thing on television by some distance. It can be extremely funny, but it handles pathos better than any show I have seen. The acting is consistently superb and the fast-paced intelligent script writing is what makes the show so unique.

I cannot recommend it highly enough.

So the series that had it all has ended. For all of you that missed this when run on Channel 4 and its offshoots over the past eight years or so snap this up. HBO have delivered the best TV drama bar none over the past decade (sorry beeb but there is more to quality drama than crinolines and bonnets).
The magnificent Band of Brothers, the glossy, sumptuous Rome, the peerless The Wire and the quirky Deadwood and Carnivale. This demonstates that the creative talent is out there but constrained by the pressure of Nielsen ratings and the blandness of network TV strictures in the US of A.

The punchy scripts, the humour and the courageous character arcs of Davids Chase's writing were a breath of fresh air on first viewing. The violence that is clearly part and ... Read More:

Many of the young people who are "into" Coronation Street will probably never have heard of Pat Phoenix. And what a shame. For us slightly(!) older viewers Pat's "Sreet" character "Elsie Tanner", was what every actress today, in every soap aspires to be. Pat was soaps first superstar, and Elsie Tanner was a rough diamond, the best of friends with those who didn't judge her, and a woman equally at ease pulling hair, and scrapping with anyone (usually in the street) who crossed her. These 3 episodes are a decade apart from each other, and you get to see Elsie Tanner in some fabulous scenes, none no more moving and emotional as the final 1984 episode, when Pat plays Elsie for the very last time. Walking down Coronation Street for the end scene Elsie stops and smiles as voices of ... Read More:

You can take it from me - five stars are not enough when it comes to rating the West Wing. This series is head and shoulders above any other drama on TV. I have all of the DVD's released so far and I am anxiously waiting for Season 5 (By the way - does anyone know when it will be released?)

From the incredible writing to the exceptional performances by the actors, this show is a treat for the senses. It will have you laughing and crying and I promise you it is never dull. Some of the storylines have been almost prophetic and all have been filled with a quality unmatched by any other dramatic series.

If you have never seen this show - buy the DVD anyway. You will not be disappointed!
