The screening the above reviewer refers to was indeed priceless but the films in that show were from a few years later and will no doubt appear in a future collection - so if you're looking for "Night Mail", this isn't the one to get though it is currently avalaible on the "Night Mail" DVD. This DVD features:

The Coming of the Dial (Stuart Legg 1933), Cable Ship (Alexander Shaw, Stuart Legg 1933), Granton Trawler (John Grierson 1934), John Atkins Saves Up (Arthur Elton 1934), Air Post (Geoffrey Clark 1934), The Glorious Sixth of June (Alberto Cavalcanti 1934), Pett and Pott (Alberto Cavalcanti 1934), 6.30 Collection (Harry Watt, Edgar Anstey 1934), Weather Forecast (Evelyn Spice 1934), Song of Ceylon (Basil Wright 1934), A Colour ... The quality of the film's transferance onto DVD is poor and the dubbing in particular is suspect, but this film is undoubtedly a classic. It's apparently the earliest example of a 'portmanteau' horror film(,a film which narrates a series of separate tales). Here, an architect visits a country house and tells the guests of a recurring nightmare he's had about the house and the inhabitants, prompting them to relate a series of supernatural experiences, the creepiest of which is the last one, involving a ventriloquist (Michael Redgrave) and a seemingly independent dummy. When the tales have been related, there is an horrific climax and a disturbing twist: the protagonist seems to be stuck in a nightmarish 'groundhog day' scenario.

The early 1940's were never going to be easy and good 'propaganda' films were essential to the well-being of the Great British Public. Went The Day Well defines the British spirit, that of total belief that 'we would win the war'. The film opens showing an English village after the war, even though the war was very much still going on at the time this film was made, and told the story of the Germans buried on English soil. It goes on to show a typical English village in full swing during the war. It never ceases to amaze me that it really was like that, according to my parents, that a terrible thing like war was going on and yet 'normal' life continued as much as possible. The stereotypical differences between the English and German soldiers was obvious ... Read More:

Not many films coming out of Britain in the late 40s portrayed English life as corrupt, seedy and excessively violent. If you have never seen this film, it is a real eye-opener. Visually, it is almost surreal--closer to German expressionism than to film noir. And the final fight between the anti-hero (Trevor Howard) and the thoroughly nasty crime boss (how many films would have a villian called "Narcissus"?) on top of the undertaker's office is a climax Hitchcock would be proud of.

Violence, corruption and flashes of creepy black humour. Fabulous!

I bought this Dvd for £ 1.00 and soon realised that I had paid about 95p too much. A very good film spoiled by the transfer from film to Dvd. As my fellow reviewer has said, the picture is sometimes so dark that it becomes almost impossible to see what one is watching. It maybe that someone will at some stage make a better job of this, until then, keep hold of your money.!!

Essential double bill of two of the finest films of the 40's.

Dead of Night(1945)Much heralded pormanteau of horror tales directed by Charles Crichton and Cavalcanti amongst others is justifiably remembered for the final segment - Michael Redgrave and that dummy! The tales are linked together by the gathering of a group of people at a country mansion, one of whom is convinced he knows everyone present because he has met them all in his dreams.
Variable in chills, each tale is memorable in it's own way with Robert Hamer's "Mirror"segment being particularly creepy.Redgrave's tour de force performance in the final tale is the icing on the cake,

Queen of Spades(1948)Slow moving but utterly riveting supernatural tale(based on a Pushkin short story)is a ... Read More:

DVD : They Made Me a Fugitive [1947] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This is a fine example of the gritty gangster movies Britain produced in the late Forties and early Fifties. We're talking wet cobblestone streets at night in Soho, brutal black marketeers who don't mind beating a woman with a studded belt, betrayal and revenge. Note that elements of the plot are discussed.

Clem Morgan (Trevor Howard), a bored ex-RAF man, is recruited by a friend, Narcy (Griffith Jones), to join his gang of black marketeers. Narcy deals in everything from whiskey to cigarettes, using his funeral business, The Valhalla of Undertaking, as a front. Narcy runs the show. He doesn't like opposition, he doesn't mind force, he has a mean streak, he enjoys a bit of cruelty. When Narcy moves to drugs, Clem says he wants out. Narcy says, "Sure," and arranges ... Nostalgia is everything it's cracked up to be in Champagne Charlie, a valentine from Ealing Studios and Alberto Cavalcanti to English music halls. Ostensibly, it's the story of George Leybourne (Tommy Trinder) and his rivalry with Alfred Vance, the Great Vance (Stanley Holloway), in the music halls of mid-Victorian England. The music halls hadn't yet become the more respectable theaters of England, from which they lasted in full glory until television appeared. In the 1860s they usually were big ale houses, unsophisticated drinking and singing establishments for the working man and his lady. In this movie's view, they were often rambunctious, loud, jolly and great fun, where the swells often showed up to see the latest entertainment, which included young dancers, and everyone joined ...
