sideways has recieved many good reviews but i must write this as a warning to anybody thinking of buying this film. the characters are completely unlikable. Miles, the central character, although clearly wounded by a life full of regrets, remains grumpy, pedantic and quite frankly much too self indulgent and self-pitying for us to feel any affection for him. the wine chat which initially sparks some interest as it makes nice use of adjective prose quite quickly becomes dull and pretentious. wine chat also is not sexy and there is a particularly clumsy scence where this becomes painfully obvious.I generally like films which explore sensitive and gentle charcters but this was a terrible diasapointment and if i had the choice again i would save ... I believed the hype on the cover. 'terrific' and 'a very funny movie'. It was dullsville to the extreme. Admittedly I only watched until the funeral but by then all five of us had had enough. And not one single laugh or faint smile. Jack couldn't have been more miserable if he'd tried. Reading other reviews the overall opinion is that it is thoroughly sad. I don't want that from a film, I'm afraid. We need cheering up in the doom and gloom that is 2008 Britain!

"Dear Lord Jesus," prays Tracy Flick the night before the election for student body president, "I do not often speak with you and ask for things, but now, I really must insist that you help me win the election tomorrow because I deserve it and Paul Metzler doesn't, as you well know. I realize that it was your divine hand that disqualified Tammy Metzler and now I'm asking that you go that one last mile and make sure to put me in office where I belong so that I may carry out your will on earth as it is in heaven. Amen."

Tracy (Reese Witherspoon) is an overachieving senior in suburban George Washington Carver High School (where the student body is all white). What Tracy wants, she gets, using a combination of single-minded hard work, bright smiles ... Read More:

What a wonderful film. Ok, it may not be PC etc etc but it was so funny and Laura Dern really shines in it. Best scene is when she is in the tub looking at her toes, reads boring, writes boring but oh lordy, genius visual comedy. Packed with hilarious comedy moments, integrated perfectly with the harsh political plot and theme or some such.
