Having just watched this film for the first time, I think a good way to describe it is to compare it to a gig. To start off there are two pretty irrelevant stories by two unknown directors which both leave you thinking 'what's this all about?', kind of like the support act. But they do set the scene for the second half of the movie, showing that Roth as the bellhop is having a real bizarre night. Then the headliners come in, Rodriguez and Tarantino, both producing hugely entertaining and enjoyable short stories which make you really pleased you watched the film. The performances by Roth, Tarantino and Jennifer Beals also help the job... definitely worth watching!!

Alexandre Rockwell's tale of the beleaguered auteur may have a touch of the autobiographical, but it also has something of the fantastic about it. Shot in grainy black and white on a shoestring it stars the fabulous Steve Buscemi with support from the always great Seymour Cassel and Jennifer Beals (at the time married to Rockwell). Stellar cameos include Jim Jarmusch, Carol Kane, Stanley Tucci and Sam Rockwell (no relation!) to name a few. Buscemi is a struggling film-maker looking for development money for his 500 page 'art film'. Cassel is the shady businessman and all round fun guy who takes the uber-serious Buscemi under his wing, and Beals is the angelic neighbour who he wants to propel to stardom - not that she cares. This is a sweet and funny film. Buscemi and Cassel are wonderful together and filming in black and white look really gives it a great look. Everyone looks beautiful in this.
