Clare Danes is a fantastic actress & she's the one reason I kept forwarding through the film to see what happened, rather than switching off.

The script is dire: what it believes to be arty silence & pregnant pauses is just very flat, dull dialogue & not enough of it.

Danes' two men options are boring & wooden; neither are anywhere near good enough for her; & I don't believe she'd see anything in either.

The film is well shot, but the repetitive, irritating music mirrors the lack of inspiration inherent in the whole of the film.

In all, one of the worst films I've ever seen. It gets one star as there's no option for no stars.

DVD : Shine / Hilary And Jackie [1996]
This edition is, at most, good value- giving you two related films- both biopics.

Scott Hicks's Shine (1996) was impressive when I initially saw it, but subsequent viewings made me feel it was somewhere between exploitative melodrama & emotional blackmail. Geoffrey Rush is Rainmannered as David Helfgott- indicative of a film that is mugging for awards & acclaim. I felt very uncomfortable about the idea of mental illness as some sort of carthartic entertainment for the audience- contrast the depiction of mental illness here with David Cronenberg's Spider or Milos Forman's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. His borderline molestation/exposure is used for laughs, which is quite nasty at the end of the day. The only section I really ... Read More:

I was completely stunned and shocked by the way that this film portayed Jacqueline du Pré as a spoilt, nymphomaniacal egotist, and Hilary as the poor victim. Anyone who has read the Elizabeth Wilson biography or any of the moving tributes made about the great cellist by those who really knew her, including her husband Daniel Barenboim, will be unable to reconcile the two images. This film should have been so different.

DVD : The Story Of The Storyteller Saint-Ex
This is an exquisite film. Soft focus black and white documentary interviews are interposed with vibrant, lush colour sequences combining to tell the story of this pilot and writer. It is not a factual biopic, but more of a capturing of the spirit of a man who seemed only fully alive when flying. Famous for his "The Little Prince" story, the visuals are often fairytale like and are always sumptuous. A quiet, mesmerising performance by Bruno Ganz, who gives the impression that his mind is always in the clouds, holds the film together and provides its' emotional core. His performance is matched by those of Miranda Richardson and Janet McTeer as the women who love him.
