Heroes and Villains is the latest in a long line of historical drama documentaries by the BBC. It follows in the tradition of "Ancient Rome: Rise and Fall of an Empire" in that the format is identical.
The big difference with this series is that it takes a broader approach, covering the lives of some of history's most famous warriors and generals, from Spartacus to Napoleon.
Each episode is directed by a different team, which makes the series a bit uneven. Therefore it's worth discussing each episode individually, in the order they appear on the discs:

Spartacus:
This episode covers the life of Spartacus, from his arrival at the Gladiator school of Capua, to his final battle against Crassus.
The first episode ... Read More:

I have just finished watching the DVD. Andrew Grieve's extremely faithful adaptation of Bruce Chatwin's novel is inspiring. While there are some occasional losses (i.e. Grieve's underplaying of Amos's abuse of Mary and Lewis's desire to achieve autonomy through independent sexual expression) there are also considerable gains in terms of focus and momentum. As somebody who currently lives in the Black Hills area (lambing season again!), I can vouch for the integrity of the cinematographic achievements of the director which are considerable and haunting. The acting more than matches the brilliant landscapes and the much-missed Bob Peck leads an inspired cast. The novel is pitched at the dark side of Hardy and succeeds brilliantly without the need for the ... Read More:

The eighth and final (so far) episode of this Hornblower series is a continuation of the seventh ("Loyalty"), though both discs can stand on their own as integral stories. I have given some episodes only three stars; none has merited five, in my opinion.

But this last is one of the best. Very convincing story and performances, although it still seems so amazing to me how the French remain such poor shots! And I am also constantly surprised how the coast of Brittany looks so much like that of South Devon.

The special effects in these later stories are far better than of earlier episodes, and in this last one there is a more realistic approach in that Hornblower is not portrayed as some super-human hero.

Excellent editing ... Read More:

Everything about this is great. The music, the action, plot everything. Very enjoyable if you have any interest in the Age of Sail or similar themed films or tv shows and still great even if not.

DVD : Hornblower - The Examination For Lieutenant [1998]
in this second episode Horatio has already realised that he likes life in the navy, so much so that he is happy to be able to take the examination for lieutenant. Unfortunately, whenever he decides to open a book and study, there is an urgent distraction in the form of an adventure, especially at a time when the Spanish decided that they were allied of the French and they began to attack the British ships (with the infamous "fire ships"). These adventures are, in fact, a way for Horatio Hornblower to see the hardships that officials have to endure: he has to be prepared to take quick, life-or-death decissions for himself and his men; he has to be very sure of his priorities to take these decissions; and his priorities are not exactly the same as those of some other ... This is the British remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic film of the same name. Anthony Andrews stars as Johnnie Aysgarth (the role originally played by Cary Grant) who falls for a wealthy hairess Lisa (Jane Curtin). After a whirlwind romance they marry. Gradually Lisa begins to suspect there is more to Johnnie than meets the eye.

As remakes go this is a pritty good film. It does take a little while to get going - but stick with it. The plot is very close to the Hitchcock version. Being a British film there are the usual selection of excellent actors including Sir Michael Horden and watch out for a brief appearance by Martin Clunes as a photographer.

The print is pritty good quality and is presented in full screen. There are no special features ... Read More:

Hornblower is what I would define as your unlikely hero. He is not poetic, rather a dull person in himself and passionate only for his job and his duty. He is quiet and not full of bloaty charmisma and charm.

You can notice the similarities he has to Nelson - not only does he share the name of Horatio (which sounds very nautical) but he is also a clever tactition. It makes for entertaining, interesting and edcuational viewing, a rare mixture of excitement and learning.

This is only the first in the series and only gives you a taste for what's to come as the series follows through the young sailor's life.

It is sometimes a bit cheesy at times, but it comes with a patriotic zeal and a willingness to infect everyone with the want and desire ... Read More:

DVD : Hornblower - The Duchess And The Devil [1999]
The only real problem with "The Duchess and the Devil," the third volume in the Emmy-winning A&E mini-series about C.S. Forester's "Horatio Hornblower" is that it comes after the first two. So much happened in those adventures that this one seems relatively tame, but it is still a first-rate episode. As our adventure hopes, Acting Lt. Hornblower (Ioan Gruffudd) and seven men capture a small French ship, La Reve. In addition to securing for himself 1000 pounds as his share of the prize money, Horatio is given command of the ship to be sailed to Britain. Traveling with him is the Duchess of Wharfedale (Cherie Lunghi), a very interesting woman who has taken a liking to "Mr. H." However, caught in a thick fog the La Reve finds itself in the middle of the Spanish fleet, now allied with Napoleon ... Read More:

"Horatio Hornblower: The Adventure Continues" consists of two tapes encompassing a single story. "Mutiny" finds our hero (Ioan Gruffudd) under arrest in Jamaica for mutiny. His old captain, now Commodore Sir Edward Pellew (Robert Lindsay), arrives to chair the tribunal that will judge the court-martial and demands to know what Mr. Hornblower thought he was doing. Of course our hero replies he was doing his duty for the good of the service. The court-martial serves as the framing device for what happened, told in flashbacks. Hornblower has the misfortune of serving under Captain James Sawyer (David Warner), whose discipline is tainted by either cruelty or insanity. After being pushed down some stairs, Sawyer is injured and during a battle with a Spanish fort puts the ship's crew in jeopardy. ... Read More:
