The Anderson family, a father (James Stewart), his six sons, daughter and daughter in law, try to sit out the war (u.s. civil) on their Virginia farmstead. He won't side with the south because he doesn't agree with slavery etc, but he won't fight against his homeland either.
Others try to entice him and his sons to join the southern cause, leading to some poignant and at times humorous moments, but as long as folk stay off his land and leave his family be he's not interested.

Not long after becoming a granddad, his youngest son is taken prisoner by union troops, so leaving his son and daughter in law to care for the farm, the rest of the family set off in pursuit. At this point the film splits, focusing sometimes on the ... Read More:

Although it's perhaps not in the same class as The Searchers or Rio Bravo, this is still one of the Duke's better westerns.

Most of the classic western ingredients are here: broody young gunslingers, stampedes, posses, brawls, wagon trains etc. It's good fun for all ages.

The picture has slight grain and a few speckles in a few scenes. But it shouldn't spoil your enjoyment.

In fact, considering the age of the film, the picture quality is probably as good as can be expected with vivid colours and a sharp picture (I suspect a lot of effort went into cleaning it up)

The mono soundtrack is a slight disappointment. As the film's rousing score would have benefited from a 5.1 mix. But it is a ... Read More:

This double bill has to be an absolute bargain for two well produced dvds starring John Wayne. The Comancheros is a rousing action packed typical Wayne movie and on its own well worth the four stars. It is The Undefeated story which is, I am afraid, just plain silly. If you suspend belief totally you will be well entertained by this story of two former enemies joining together to help each other. Its just that Wayne is quite believable as the Union colonel. It is the Southern colonel played by Rock Hudson that lets the film down once you start to examine the story. Hudson just does not fit the role of Southern gentleman/colonel. His character is hopeless as a military commander. When his waggons come under attack he has to be told by Wayne ... Read More:

Given the restrictions between a book and a film this one is a fairly good rendition. i bought the book many, many years ago at a market and recently re-read it which compelled me to buy the DVD.

Roger Moore is perfect as the chauvanistic ffolkes and carries his characters confident arrogance well. if there is one draw back though and that is Anthony Perkins who i feel would have been better cast as the explosives expert (bad guy) as opposed to the leading bad guy.

that aside this is a really good film and could have been the basis for another roger moore series like the saint etc.

if you love old movies then you could not go wrong by adding this to your collection.

This is a great movie, the kind of "oldie but goldie" which is worth to be rediscovered many years after the first viewing. It has a good and smart story, very good action scenes which impress even today, 30 years after and last but not least, a STELLAR casting. Just count - Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris, Stewart Granger and Harry Kruger, in all five stars. And then Jack Watson, a less known actor, who plays sergeant master Sandy Young - and with his size and his face he is simply the perfect incarnation of sergeant masterdom. The story descibes a rescue operation in a fictif African country - a major mining company want to save a imprisoned African leader, hoping that once he seizes the power, he will give them favourable terms on ... This is an enjoyable film (based on the book "Boarding Party" by James Leasor) about an operation to scupper a German boat in Goa harbour in 1943. My grandfather was in the attack party, recruited as their explosives expert. Here is his description of the events:

"While at the Khadakvasla camp I was asked to join a proposed expedition to the then neutral port of Goa on the West Coast of India. The scheme had been hatched by two senior officers of S.O.E. to capture an almost new German liner that had been sheltering in Goa harbour since 1939, and the plan was for a party of irregulars from Calcutta with one or two S.O.E. officers to carry out the mission. The irregulars were, if my memory serves me right, Calcutta Scottish a sort of Territorial Army ... Read More:

I have now purchased two different copies of Mclintock. This Wayne/Ohara film is a gem of a comedy. However please dont be tempted to buy the DVD. I have the original VHS release and believe me this old, well worn and well used video shows alot better than the DVD versions on the market. I thought a had originally bought a pirate movie the copy was that bad. Save yourself the time of returning the DVD and dont bother.

This is a classic western with a great cast and storyline, Andrew Mc Lagen does a great job of directing, Richard Widmark and Kirk Douglas turn in excellent performances.
If you haven't seen this film before, don't worry about spending your money, it is a worthwhile investment. I'm not like other reviewers who go to great lengths to write a load of useless spiel about the film. My advice is watch it if it is on television, if a friend has copy of it, ask if you can borrow it, then make up your own mind.
