This is a visually stunning fairytale movie with an intelligent and beautiful heroine who doesn't need saving and a very charming prince who's got some learning to do. A true feel good movie. :)

Despite a lavish and costly production with dozens of elephants and a purpose built set this film feels too long and doesn't grip. Jodie Foster plays the part impeccably but her character is hard to like and there is no chemistry between her and the King. The story is a bit formulaic and left me feeling flat. Although it strains to achieve a sense of the period and an exotic location there is something stagey and stiff about this film.

After I saw it on TV during the 90's, and being short on sci-fi gender DVD box-sets (which I love), I gave it a go on this one and it was very worthy. I really enjoy it then, and also now. It focuses on a teenager genius that discovered a way to visit other Earth paralel dimensions, and with some friends is forced on doing it until they can find their original Earth parallel dimension. They visit a doomsday Earth threatened by a huge asteroid; a plague afflicted Earth, and so on. The DVD have English subtitles, for those whom need a little help on catching the dialogs (witch is great for all non-English); but poor special features. The box is nice.
