It is an interesting film, but not more than that. What does it shows? That the English were particularly sectarian during WW2 on the African front. Nothing new under the sun. Anyone who had a slightly different name or a slightly surprising or uncommon attitude was at once considered as a spy unworthy of any trust. This created myriads or even legions of misunderstandings and human errors along with cruelty, barbaric acts, violence, etc. The only interest of this film is the technical brilliance in the use of flashbacks that only happen in the head of this English patient who plays the loss of his memory to protect himself against his own name and his own ascendants. Yet his survival is not possible and the nurse who is looking after him is ... Read More:

Unusual film featuring the odd-looking Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman.

It appears that a woman's grief is so harsh at the death of her husband, he is called back by her subconscious - if only to help her to survive the terrible loss, until she can 'relate' to another man and move on. A little silly in places, but extremely sad and moving in others, and one cannot help but wonder at just how we would react if our dead loved one should return. I personally suspect that the death of someone so close has such impact, that despite our desperate wish for their return, things would never quite be the same again, and this movie certainly gives that impression.

Juliet Stevenson gives an award-winning performance in this, ... Read More:

From the first reading of Highsmith's novel I felt she was a minor genius in evoking both the mind of a deeply disturbed character and the divided society of high elegance and low misery in which he moved and from which he was alienated. Was the split in his mind or the society's? Surely both. For years Holywood seemingly "bottled" out of confronting the issue as it avoided Highsmith's most masterly opus. This film was eagerly awaited. Disappointingly the whole comes to less than the sum of its parts. The locations and period values are stunning. The direction is considered. The essence of Highsmith's novel sporadically peeps through some of the acting. Yet the final article fails to convince. Damon and Law are too unsubtle and lack the chemistry to realize ... An excellent film. Unfortunately it was deprived of Academy Awards it would otherwise have deserved by the fact that it came out in the same award year as The Return of the King (which was possibly the best film in the history of cinema). Jude Law takes a break from his penchant for vapid non-acting and turns in an astonishing performance as Inman. Nicole Kidman is very good, but is thoroughly trumped by a Renee Zellweger who I feel can breath excellence into the most dull of roles (I could not have countenanced Bridget Jones in any other form; fortunately Cold Mountain's Ruby Thewes is a gorgeous, meaty character). The movie was by no means over-long, but I would recommend the novel for a fuller flavour of the story. More films like this would make expensive trips ... Read More:

This set is intriguing, beguiling, captivating and frustrating. I'm no Beckett purist, so I found some of the liberties taken with the films, such as 'What Where' the most exciting pieces on this set. 'Play', however, is the high point here, with the perfect marriage of Beckett's text and a thoroughly visceral use of camera. There is little negative to say apart from the actual DVD design itself, with the same snatch of music used for every menu, and the same interviews included in both the extras accompanying the plays and the documentary about the project. This makes the high price for this set a little hard to bear. But the films themselves are worth it...

It took me a while to watch this movie after reading some negative reviews , but I was greatly surprised by this beautiful piece of work by Anthony Minghella .It tells the story of Will ( Jude Law ) an architect and Amira ( Juliette Binoche ) an Bosnian refugee in North London and touches on several subjects like relationships and immigration

The film starts with a break in and the story becomes interesting from the beginning, the pace is good , the story is simple but beautifully put together , perhaps the best thing about this movie is the way AA wraps the whole thing in the end.

It is filmed around Charing Cross and North London and for some reason the director choose not to have panoramic shots of the area and concentrate on the characters. ... Read More:

I can see what they were trying to do when they made this film. The scenery and cinematography are lovely, and the makers were clearly trying to catch some of the romance and beauty of a bygone era. To a degree they succeeded but sadly on a visual basis only. The storyline is weak and strains credibility, and the characters are wooden and lifeless, with the central character played by Ralph Fiennes being one of the most boring character of the whole film - in fact he was so borinig that I can't even remember the character's name. Overall I am amazed how such a conspiculously expensive and lavish production manages to be so utterly dull.
