While not on the same lengths as Cronenberg's latest foray, A History of Violence, Atom Egoyan pulls off a decent Canadian feature with this film, and heightens it with a great acting talent of Colin Firth and the man who knows everyone and one of my personal favorite actors (and pincushions), Kevin Bacon.

While the storyline becomes a little convoluted half-way through, the performances and presentation of the film keep up throughout. The dual narration is annoying at first, but becomes acceptable after a few minutes. The presentation of the 1950s settings, and the 1970s settings were done well. While some of the costumes are off in some areas, in others, they are spot-on. It makes you wonder why Oscar skipped over the film (until ... Read More:

This feature should be filed under that elusive category `One of those really good films you have never heard of'. The story is beautifully handled and filmed by Atom Egoyam and is perhaps his best movie to date. The story unfolds at a gentle pace in interconnecting threads and flashbacks and centres around a solid performance from Ian Holm as the troubled lawyer ambulance chasing in a community that has suffered a tragic communal accident whilst battling demons with his own personal tragedy (a hopeless relationship with his drug addicted daughter). Sarah Polley also features strongly in another troubled father/daughter relationship and survivor of the accident who throughout the film narrates the tale of the Pied Piper as a flashback babysitter which is ... This set is intriguing, beguiling, captivating and frustrating. I'm no Beckett purist, so I found some of the liberties taken with the films, such as 'What Where' the most exciting pieces on this set. 'Play', however, is the high point here, with the perfect marriage of Beckett's text and a thoroughly visceral use of camera. There is little negative to say apart from the actual DVD design itself, with the same snatch of music used for every menu, and the same interviews included in both the extras accompanying the plays and the documentary about the project. This makes the high price for this set a little hard to bear. But the films themselves are worth it...

Atom Egoyan's Exotica is an outstanding movie. I have seen Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter (1997) which is also very good. A father's (obsessive) love for his daughter(s) is featured in both movies, consequently the theme must mean something special to Egoyan. He is a most talented and original movie maker, a Canadian as are his players, Bruce Greenwood, (Francis Brown, the accountant whose daughter was murdered), Sarah Polley, (Tracey, the high school girl), and Mia Kirshner, (Christina, the exotic dancer). His wife, Arsinee Khanjian and Polley were also featured in The Sweet Hereafter.

What really makes the movie is Egoyan's use of time and action sequence. He cuts up the chronological order of events and then presents them in a dramatic way. ... Read More:

The Sweet Hereafter is such a first-rate movie that I wanted to take another look at this one, which Egoyan made two years later. It's not in the same league as Hereafter, but it is an excellent, disturbing movie.

Bob Hoskins plays Joseph Hilditch, who runs a big kitchen operation to feed the employees of a factory. At night he cooks elaborate dinners in his own gadget-filled kitchen while watching old video tapes of a cooking show. The star of the show had been his mother, an enveloping presence who completely dominated young Joey. Then he eats his meals alone, listening to Mantovani and other standbys of the Fifties. He also occasionally helps out young women when they are in distress.

Felicia (Elaine Cassidy) has come to his city ... Read More:

DVD : Friday the 13th: The Series - The First Season (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Friday The 13th The Series ran for three seasons in the late 80's early 90's. The basic plot is two cousins inherit a strange antique shop which holds a dark secret. The owner (their uncle played by R G Armstrong) sold his soul to the devil and now they have to trace each hexed antique which has been sold before it manifests it's evil power. The series has nothing to do with the Friday The 13th films so don't expect to see Jason hacking his way through campers in each episode.

The series does seem a little dated now - the clothes, the hair and music all reflect the time it was made - but this does not really spoil you enjoyment. The print quality is ok but does look a little washed out in places. There are not alot of special features - all you get ... Read More:

Unlike some reviewers I was completely drawn into the beautifully crafted movie. By describing the events in 1915 through contemporary characters who continue to be deeply affected by them, we can also feel their emotional upheavals. How can man be so cruel to man, why are the atrocities still denied by Turks, what could have been the reasons for so much hate, why are the excuses still put forward? The cinematic canvas is completed by recreations of the historical events in the 'film within the film', and the personal conflicts between the modern characters which have different levels of connection with the fate of Armenians in Turkey and their history. The film needs and deserves viewers who like to concentrate and have their own emotions stirred. Excellent acting ... Read More:
