I usually enjoy Shakespeare "done modern" but this was awful! It was Shakespeare meets Westside story, Moulin Rouge and greasy was the word that came to mind. The film kept to the traditional language of Shakespeare but it does not suit American accents. The words grated, uttered thoughtlessly for the most part from the mouths of Hawaiian shirted American gang youth. Even Peter Postlethwaite seemed preoccupied with maintaining his American accent over what he was saying.
Dicaprio and Clare Danes however do make a charming couple and you cannot help wishing that their love would survive the maelstrom of brutish hate that the two families have for each other. The film gets its reputation for being "good" from this simple alchemy and possibly ... Read More:

What do you get if you combine comedy, dancing, sparkles and false tan? Strictly Ballroom!

The main character, Scott, likes to make up his own moves when ballroom dancing and as a result loses his dance partner. Enter Fran, geeky, spotty, plain Jane, who wants Scott to teach her how to dance. Scotts pushy mother is not to keen on this arrangement.

This was always one of my favourites as a child.
This is a quirky, funny film that will be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

At first, my wife and I thought it just had a long arty f@rty starting, but after 25 minutes of loud shouty bizarre colour schemes we got a head ache and gave up.

Our advice, unless you are arty f@rty or are just trying to impress someone, don't bother watching this tripe.

I wish I could have given this a negative number 0 is too kind and giving it a 1 is far too generous.

DVD : Romeo And Juliet [1997]
Personally I love this film. I would recommend it to anyone. There are so many memorable performances that it's hard to single anyone out. For me, John Leguiziamo as Tybalt gives an incredibly muscular, powerful performance, while Pete Postlethwaite (the Friar) and Paul Sorvino (Juliet's father) are compelling, even quietly astonishing. The leads have a chemistry that manages to be both sweet and deeply passionate at the same time, which makes the curtailment of their love all the more tragic.

Also, for once, Mercutio does not steal the show. I have seen so many performances where the death of Mercutio seems to be the greatest tragedy of the play and the loss of the lovers a sad addendum to it. In this film, while Mercutio's passing is tragic and sad, ... Read More:

The movie s'Strictly Ballroom' was supplied with a mono soundtrack - I had to buy another one in Australia with 5.1, this is UNACCEPTABLE.

Ok, love shakespeare, excellent set of DVD, recomended. But I would not purchase it from Amazon again. In fact I don't think I will be purchasing from Amazon EU again.

I tried to complain about the seller Amazon s.a.r.l, who is the company that does business in the UK, for sending me mail shots from British Gas and Bupa in with my package. I cannot use either of them as I am not a UK resident nore was the sending address a UK address, but they still felt it was fine to send me down to the recycling place.

When I tried to complain the first time I got "thanks for your suggestion" when I was looking for answers, and "send a letter to this UK address if you want to take if further" when I asked for them to answer my questions.

I am still at a ... Read More:

DVD : La Boheme [1993]
This is Boheme updated to the 1950s, add to that young singers who look, sing and really act their parts, and you have a recipe for success.

The main protagonists are dressed in bright colours, making them stand out against the all pervading grey and deep blue of everything else, even the crowds in Act 1 Scene 2 are kept in shadows. The stage sets are modern and minimalist, but somehow create the space needed, the Parisian square is amazingly effective.

Cheryl Barker and David Hobson are superb as the lovers Mimi and Rodolfo, I would love to see them in Traviata but unfortunately this appears to be the only recording of them. Christine Douglas is a fine, feisty Musetta that never goes over the top.

This is a Boheme that grabs you emotionally from ... Read More:
