Unfortunately, this is miles away from being as good as the books or the first film. They changed the plot so they could shoe-horn Hugh Grant into the film (and a not very good fight scene with Colin Firth as well). But so much worse is the sense that Bridget has been made into a figure of fun, rather than someone who was funny because we related to her. Not funny, not romantic, even Colin Firth is less lovely in this film.

I bought this DVD on the strength of previous reviews. It is humourless, ponderous and without wit. Drag queens who never get out of drag are not funny; neither is the plot.

Took me ten years to catch this film had no idea what I had missed.
The film was given to me because of my deep love of Cornwall, in truth I would watch just about any old tripe if it included shots of the Cornish coast I love so dear. This coast has been an inspiration for artists for centuries. On a visit to Cornwall an inspired Richard Wagner wrote the greatest opera ever written - Tristan and Isolde.

Joseph Conrad in his story Amy Foster was at his most insightful. It is largely a story about 'difference' and how a shipwrecked stranger can be treated with hostility by the local community to the point where this endangers his life, Conrad was himself a polish immigrant to England. Amy, for quite diverse reasons is also an ... Read More:

This is still the bench mark for the making of any film about love, sexuality, and relationships about young people, especially in the 12years to 20years age group. In fact "Oranges" should be required viewing for any person making a film about blossoming sexuality, without being either trite, judgemental, holier than though or hysterical!
Simply brilliant!

Now, it is true to say that the iconography of Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones isn't one to be taken too seriously. Beginning life as a newspaper serial whose captions would later constitute a worldwide bestselling novel, Fielding at once captured the humility, the optimism and every single wine stain of the modern day middle-class working girl in England, with barbed asides regarding celebrity culture and the dating game that bordered on the scabrous but that were also never less-than-funny. To turn the novel into a charming romantic comedy blockbuster proved to be a bit of a no-brainer for Working Title and Miramax, and thanks to a marketing push that enveloped the world much like Miss Jones's underpants did her tummy and waist, pubs became wine bars or ...
