Bertolucci clearly enjoys the cinematic references in this film, which is, in part, a paean to the glory days of Hollywood. This aspect of the movie is perhaps the most successful.

Set against the backdrop of the 1968 Parisian riots, The Dreamers is a study of sexual awakening and youthful idealism. The claustrophobic and cloistered world of Parisian brother and sister, Theo and Isabelle, becomes a place of discovery for them and the American innocent Matthew, whom they invite to join them while their laissez-faire parents are away. Within their sprawling apartment the three indulge in games of sexual manipulation that turn into obsession and confused despair.

The problem with this otherwise impressive film is that ... Read More:

The plus: The movie is pleasantly filmed in a beautiful setting of country houses in rural Italy; unconventionally overt display of sexual relationship and naturist display; true love triumphed and rewarded in the end with the joyful first-times.

The minus: flawed script, unfocused story where the journey of discovering the identity of father and resuming of youthful love is distracted to an explicit and needless anecdotes of naturist playing, love-making and sexual mind games. It is unconvincing and has little reality touch. There is also a myriad of strange yet underdeveloped characters. Directors seems could not decide on following a core storyline and instead packed the movie with large quantity of sub plots and supporting characters. ... Read More:

Bertolucci's 1973 film created the most amazing furore on release, largely due to it's(for the time)sexual frankness.Anyone who has watched modern porn will wonder what the fuss was about.
It's a film about a US expat(Brando),recently widowed, who hooks up with a younger woman(Schneider)for a no-strings sex-only relationship. The rest of the film charts this relationship to it's end.Schneider naked certainly has her charms, the same can't be said about Brando, surely the most overrated actor ever.
It seems that Bertolucci, while planning LTIP,originally planned for the story to be about a homosexual relationship(Jean-Paul Trintignant had agreed to appear in it)-that would really have blown the minds of the audiences of the early 1970s!!It would probably ... Read More:

Oh God.. this was dire.. I've read other people's reviews and I'm certain they work for the film company or they bought shares in the making of this terrible attempt at something that could have been beautiful and moving. You can see where they were going with it but every scene is messy, very badly acted (mostly by the Western cast) and far too 'lets-make-it-look-magical' to actually mean anything in the end. Didn't anyone tell the director, trying to make Western life appear cold and empty is going to take more than just adding a blue filter onto the camera lens and then whipping it off for an orange filter when in comes anything remotely Buddhist... Hmmm remotely Buddhist, that kind of sums this film up. I only paid 30p for this DVD but really, that was still too ... Read More:

This to me was a very powerful movie, I loved the story, and the final outcome was how it should be. Somehow we believe that Kings, Queens, Emperors etc are entitled to their power, that somehow they deserve it. This is how this emperor saw himself, he believed he was better, and above the average person, his sense of entitlement and view of reality was so perverted, that he did everything possible to retain and regain his position in life. However from the day he entered the palace he was a pawn, powerless to act, yet he never sees this. Maybe we don't all understand his re-education, but this is what makes the ending so great. There is a fantastic moral to this story. A beautiful story, sad, moving, and somehow, strangely uplifting. Highly recommended

The MGM DVD (with brown tinted cover) is a poor, blurred release with a heavily cut opening credit sequence. Released in Australia, Switzerland and France in 2005, it was the first attempt made for a DVD release in the English language. The Paramount Region 1 DVD available from amazon.com is the very best, and also the 20th Century Fox DVD, virtually the same as the Paramount print and available from amazon.co.uk is just as good. Don't waste time or money on the MGM DVD.

A really beautiful transfer (equal, in fact, to the remastered print recently in cinemas) with Vittorio Storaro's careful colour schemes and striking compositions given the presentation they deserve. Even with postage from the US, this is amazing value and Bertolucci's masterpiece should be on your shelf.

The end of this film summarises my feelings so well. One of the perfect endings of cinema. It encapsulates the tragedy of the story, the artistry of the cinematography and finally the cinematic skill of Bertolucci better than anything I can write here.

All I can comment further on is obviously, the end scene. After Bertolucci brilliantly carves the character of the Last Emperor and shows both his weaknesses and human characteristics; we see a lonely and forlorn man return to his palace - that is no longer his home, but a tourist centre. Few words, no melancholic music - the images and the actions tell their own heartbreaking story. It has me in tears everytime. He has essentially a good person who had fallen victim to the metamorphsis of China's political landscape - he died with ... Read More:
