A great series ! Lewis is a joy to watch as it is packed with superb actors while the editor has done his job to a high standard ! The writing is first rate - it is clear that Colin Dexter is exerting a very positive influence on the proceedings ! Robbie Lewis is a more sombre character now that his wife has died and that his best friend Morse has passed away . Laurence Fox has risen to the challenge and is an excellent choice to play Hathaway - had they wanted a sidekick that was totally different to Lewis then they have certainly picked both the right actor and the best possible character . The main reason why I bought this DVD was because it was written in part by Jimmy Mcgovern.Being from Liverpool myself I obviously knew about the dockers dispute but this drama gives you a totally new insight.The acting and writing are fantastic and a big plus for this DVD is that you actually get the chance to see the channel 4 documentry which shows how the film was brought together with the help of the dockers who co-wrote this project. If I could recommend one DVD to you this would be it.BUY IT NOW!!

When I first saw this on ITV a couple of years ago I was VERY disappointed, and thought maybe viewing it again on this R1 DVD would let me see it from a more objective view. But if anything it looks worse!! Please note that this version, that was shown in the USA has HUGE edits from the one on ITV. Whole sections are cut, from the start, which I thought was one of the best bits, (with Boudica giving a blade to the water in ritual). The interesting idea of a love story between one of Boudica's daughters and a Roman soldier.....this doesn't even make an appearance in this version. It's been hacked apart, and lost some of the best parts in what was mostly a poor production. I had high hopes of Alex Kingston in the role, she ... Read More:

Being for many years totally devoted to Morse, never thought that any similiar programme would reach the same supberb heights I find that I am entranced by Lewis, Kevin Whately is utterly believable in the title role & his partnership with Hathaway will be up there with the best, it is wonderful watching the relationship develop. Long may it continue!
