I missed Local Hero first time around. Despite it being generally well received and carrying it's positive credentials into the DVD age,it was always a film that I promised myself I must watch some day. Finally that day arrived....Twenty 25 years on !
Those who have watched those quirky culture clash TV series like Northern Exposure, Two thousand acres of sky, Hamish Macbeth etc etc, will be familiar with the formula. Sophisticated urbanites meet eccentric rustics who are actually a lot smarter than they're given credit for. Q lots of knowing winks and japes at the city slickers expense.
For me after seeing the above TV series BEFORE Local Hero, I had unknowingly, been given the main course before the the starter. I found the film ... Read More:

I never tire of watching this film. It is simply perfect. Every word of dialogue is spot on. Always appears in the 'top 50' lists somewhere. "Bella - bella".

DVD : Gregory's Two Girls [1999]
John Gordon Sinclair is perfect as Gregory Underwood, the bumbling teacher with strong left-wing morals, and a desire to change the world - but lacking the get-up-and-go to actually do so.

The main message of this film is one of making a difference, even if it's a small one. Mr. Underwood's infatuation with a schoolgirl is made more difficult to ignore when he becomes involved in her extra-curricular investigation into a local firm whom she believes is involved in manufacturing torture equipment.

This is a very political film and accurately reflects the feeling of many fellow left-wing thinkers in this country who recognise the wrong in the world and dream of making a change - but never getting round to it. Anti-Americanism is ... Read More:

I love the film. I love the music and love most of this album. Some tracks seem a bit strange such as the second one which is why I was a bit choosy as to which ones went onto my MP3 player. The main theme is haunting and deffinitely the best, the ceilidh music less memorable. All in all though this is a good soundtrack album. If only I could get hold of the film on DVD I would be very happy.

DVD : Being Human [1994]
This is one of my favourite films. It gets slated generally in reviews. I think it is a pretty clever concept, following the five lives of one man through history and showing that basically things don't change, that the song remains the same. Maybe I am just a bit sentimental, but I love the end story with Robin Williams as the happless father connecting with his estranged children.

Likewise the opening "act" set on the west coast of Scotland, without any recognisable language is superbly done, showing us what it might have been like to have been suddenly put upon by a viking invasion.

i remember seeing it in london's ica when it was first released. i think it's bill forsyth's funniest movie, great glasgow dialogue from the boys who just want to be able to live off their 'ill-gotten drains'.
