I really liked this film. Sequels can often be a real let down, but Poltergeist 2 explains why Carol Anne was chosen by the poltergeist, with a bit more insight into the family.

I found myself asking a few questions throughout the film - where was the older sister, and how did they get a real person so skeletal looking to play Kane. I looked it up and discovered that she was sadly strangled by her boyfriend in real life after the 1st film, quite shocking as I assumed it was just due to a money dispute or something similar that caused her to be absent. As for Kane, he was so skeletal looking because he was dying from stomach cancer and passed away in the middle of filming, hence the appearance of the beast towards the end of the ... Read More:

This is a great movie, the music and acting are fantastic, however the quality of the film is terrible, especially at the beginning. Little Anna Mae looked more like the Elephant Man on our copy of the DVD (unless we have a duff one) and spoilt our enjoyment of the film. But we hung on in and whether it got better quality or we just got used to it, it was a great film!

I really enjoyed this movie, which worked for me on several levels, or at least across several generations. I was there in the seventies listening to bands like Strange Fruit, and the film got the feel of those times right. Now I'm an old geezer like the band members, and the film got the feel of that right too. Connolly as roadie was a good choice, providing a salty anchor for the sometimes thin narrative.

One thing that seems 'off' about the way the film was promoted is the praise heaped on Mick Jones (Spooky Tooth, Foreigner) and Chris Difford (Squeeze) for the great music. Their names don't even appear in the IMDB listing for the film and I got the impression that the real force behind the music was Steve Donnelly, who is credited with ... Read More:

Disconcerting at first to see grown-ups playing children's parts, then by turns amusing, chilling and finally devastating, this production has held up very well. The actors are brilliant, and any sight of Colin Welland on dvd is most welcome.
The story moves from a bunch of kids larking around in rural wartime England, into darker territory as we learn to what extent the child is father to the man.

DVD : Breaking Glass [1980]
Lovely punkette chanteuse Hazel O'Connor plays a blinder in the somewhat autobiographic role of Kate, desperate to succeed, whilst maintaining her ethics, in the cut-throat music business.

Hazel's brilliant songs are enough to recommend this movie in its own right but, unlike some musicals, Breaking Glass is far more than just a vehicle to promote the artiste's work. The sense of unease stoked by the rise of neo-Nazi and anarchic groups in late 70's/early 80's urban England and the shadier side of the music industry are expertly recreated here.

Furthermore, Hazel's depiction of the roller-coaster rise to stardom, resulting in mental breakdown, is impeccably observed. Why this hugely talented woman's career as an actress never really took off ... Read More:

THE JUROR is the story of a woman who almost too eagerly volunteers to be on the jury in the murder trial of a Mafia godfather. Many people would happily rather not serve on such a jury, but not Annie Laird. The judge asks her if she's read about the case. She says no - but she's heard about it from her son (!) from whom she's heard about the defendant. Her son said he's "the big Spaghetti-O" in the mob (the courtroom giggles).

She says THAT in an open courtroom, with the accused murderer and his henchmen sitting right there. Wouldn't a mother's instincts at least prompt her not to mention her child? Geez! Is she a complete dummy? Now, she's asked for it. In fact, she gets it throughout a movie that maybe could have been whittled down into a nice little thriller, ... Read More:
