This western, the first of four which were written by Burt Kennedy, directed by Budd Boetticher and starred Randolph Scott, is no work of art...but it definitely is a work of great craftsmanship. With a playing time of just 78 minutes there is not a moment of unnecessary characterization, exposition or motivation. The siege of the Alamo took place in early 1836 some 200 or so men defended the old crumbling adobe mission for 13 days against the might of the Mexican Army, apart from a small group of women and young children there were no known survivors. From a novel by Niven Busch and Oliver Crawford THE MAN FROM THE ALAMO (1953) is a B-Western directed by Bud Boetticher and starring Glenn Ford in the title role.

John Stroud (Ford) with a small group of locals from his home town secretly draw lots to decide which of them will leave the fort to protect their families. Stroud draws the black bean and prepares to leave the fort to the dismay of the other defenders. Riding hell-for-leather he arrives home too late, discovering from Carlos (sole surviving ... DVD : 7 Men From Now [1956] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
I saw this film on its first cinema release in the UK, and on one or two subsequent occasions in Sunday programmes - you have to be of a certain age to recall these! It has been "lost" for many years and I was delighted to see its re-release in this beautifully-restored and excellent special edition. Scott gives his usual dour performance, but what lifts the film out of the ordinary is Lee Marvin's bounty hunter - apparently laid-back, but a ruthless killer. The action is very well-staged, but is often implicit rather than explicit - I confess that I found the film less violent than I had remembered. A gem of a film that surpasses many more lavish productions, NOT TO BE MISSED.
