A classic film from Ealing Studios focusing on the glorious bygone days of British Railways.
The Titfield railway is up for closure. Mortified, the local community propose to run the railway themselves, competing with the local bus company. Superbly shot in the beautiful West Country in glorious technicolour and with steam trains and the atmosphere of the tranquil branch line galore. A bit strange in places, especially when we are expected to believe a steam engine can run off the rails, however, this is Ealing and nothing should be taken too seriously.
As this film centres around a railway closure, could this have been one of Dr. Beeching's favourites?
First class!!

When he meets mister pendlebury, a souvenir trinket maker, he finally has the last element of his plan. the two recruit a couple of crooks to help them, and the robbery of the century is go. but will they get away with it?

The quality of the film's transferance onto DVD is poor and the dubbing in particular is suspect, but this film is undoubtedly a classic. It's apparently the earliest example of a 'portmanteau' horror film(,a film which narrates a series of separate tales). Here, an architect visits a country house and tells the guests of a recurring nightmare he's had about the house and the inhabitants, prompting them to relate a series of supernatural experiences, the creepiest of which is the last one, involving a ventriloquist (Michael Redgrave) and a seemingly independent dummy. When the tales have been related, there is an horrific climax and a disturbing twist: the protagonist seems to be stuck in a nightmarish 'groundhog day' scenario.

One of the early Ealing comedies set in post-war London, so there's a lot of bomb sites and rubble! A young man (Harry Fowler) is looking for a job - a weekly children's comic (The Trump) comes his way and he begins to notice that some of the comic's contents are accurate (for example he sees a car in the comic that has the same registration number as a car he spots in the street). In checking up further he and some of his chums become convinced that the comic is being used by crooks to send coded messages to each other about potential robberies. The kids seek out The Trump's author (a wonderful cameo from Alastair Sim) to check whether his original stories have been changed. The action takes off from there! This is a lovely little film, with a good ... Read More:

Every so often this one comes out of the collection and like fine vintage wine never fails to surprise and delight! It is simply fabulous. Cleese, Palin, Kline, and of course La Curtis wearing tight jeans! Doesn't she look fabulous? The story is very good, the plot twists, turns, and squirms its way to the finale. There are so many good punchlines, so many good scenes, so many memorable moments that it is too much to describe here. It would spoil it too. Quite simply one of the all time great movies.

Season 2 sees the introduction of three new prominant characters: James Gordon's younger daughter Jenny (Stacy Dorning), Amy's urchin nephew Ned Lewis (Stephen Garlick) and Squire Armstrong (Michael Culver). Episodes 1 and 2 entitled "A Member Of The Family" focuses on them specifically. Ned is welcomed into the Gordon family household and immediately falls foul of Armstrong who (unjustly) accuses him of burglary. Jenny upsets the squire when she and Black Beauty sabotage a fox hunt by helping the intended prey avoid an untimely death. Further adventures ensue with these teenagers, including Kevin Gordon (a very much underrated Roderick Shaw) and village scamp Albert (Tony Maiden), finding themselves involved in extraordinary situations, with Beauty invariably coming ... At last one of the best 60s British comedies gets a DVD release. The Big Job is a real classic - full of silliness, visual jokes and, best of all, a great view of contemporary social attitudes courtesy of a superb Talbot Rothwell script. Joan Sims has never been better than as the randy landlady, Dick Emery (who I've never really found sympathetic elsewhere) is very good indeed, and there is a lovely cameo from Derek Guyler as a musically obsessed Police Sergeant.

There are 3 quite outstanding scenes:-

The first evening meal chez Sims with Emery's explanation of bird watching.

Guyler taking down the particulars of the theft of a lorry full of tools.

Emery and Sims discussing the possibility of changed sleeping arrangements. ... Read More:

DVD : Ealing Comedy DVD Collection - The Ladykillers/Kind Hearts and Coronets/The Lavender Hill Mob/The Man in the White Suit [1955]

This is a wonderful Ealing collection with four favourites to enjoy:

The Ladykillers (1955) - It never really got any better than this at Ealing - a comedy masterpiece. Loads of entertainment value here, from the gang of crooks posing as a string quartet, to the wonderfully dotty little old lady with a vivid imagination and a noisy parrot. Lots of nice little cameos here too (including Frankie Howerd as a frustrated barrow-boy). The casting is just perfect, including an outrageously disguised Alec Guinness as "The Professor", a "wide boy" Peter Sellers and a gangsterish Herbert Lom. The story is excellent and it's all in colour.

Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) - A highly entertaining black comedy about an illegitimate heir (Dennis Price) who tries ... Read More:
