This is a staggeringly good piece of TV drama which has justifiably become a classic. It's hard to imagine any producer today taking the time to explore a novel in the way this adaptation does, a full 11 episodes which allow the viewer to luxuriate in the story and thoroughly explore the characters. There has always been debate over whether there was a mythological "Golden Age of TV", but I think the early 1980s saw something quite remarkable at Granada Studios, at least in the field of period adaptations, and Brideshead might just be the pinnacle.

Evelyn Waugh's novel is a heady evocation of time and place, as well as an exploration of spirituality, and the series captures all this with consummate skill, from the glorious period ... Read More:

Having watched this photoplay of one of the great, yet little known, people of history, I was left to wonder if the film could have been any better. Having watched it again a dozen times, each time more critically, I am left to answer unequivocally "no". The plot, the casting, the effects, the script, the production; everything. It's "all good."

Set in two worlds, "Longitude" sets out to depict the lives of two men: the first is John Harrison, maker of the first correct timepiece for use at sea, struggling with the Board of Longitude re the recognition of his work. The man dedicated his life to finding a practical solution to the problem of finding longitude at sea, a solution to which all navigators today owe their livelihoods. As is ... Read More:

Goodness me, people do get their knickers in a twist about this series. Although there is plenty that is excellent about it (namely the performances) there is one crashing great problem with it and that's the screenplay which is just plain lazy to the point of excess (if that isn't some kind of oxymoron).

This must have been an easy ride for John Mortimer. All he did was take the dialogue from the novel and stick it in screenplay form, voila. Don't believe me? Read a chapter of the novel, watch an episode, keep going to the end and you'll see what I mean. And any other gaps are just plugged with long tracts of voiceover which is always an indication that a writer doesn't have the creativity to do something more filmic.

The actors are excellent, particularly Alex Guinness as a brain-damaged war veteran, who hardly says a word but whose body-language conveys much. The film tries to combine comedy with sad memories of comrades and relatives killed in the Second World War in a group of ill-matched people visiting war graves in France. The comedy is the more successful aspect, especially Jeanne Moreau as a lively and tarty woman who "served" two of the visiting elderly veterans during the war. Most of the characters emerge as caricatures such as grumpy old men and a shrewish wife, which diminishes the impact of the sadder parts of the film.

I bought this for my daughter and we sat and watched it together and both loved it. It is a surprisingly good family movie with a superb all star (mostly) British/Irish cast, including Peter O'Toole, Samantha Morton, John Lynch, Kelly MacDonald, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Robert Hardy, Edward Fox, Gregor Fisher and Steve Pemberton (The League of Gentlemen) who makes a fantastic bad guy.

It is a traditional heartwarming family story of a boy being seperated from his dog and overcoming exceptional odds and many hurdles to be re-united. It has highs and lows, beautiful scenery and some great performances. Certain to pull on the old heart strings this is one I highly recommend for all family viewing. A surprising little gem, everybody I have loaned this ... Read More:

I cannot make my mind up if I like this film or not. It is beautifully filmed but the actors' performances are a bit lacklustre. I really loved Kirstin Scott Thomas in 'The English Patient' and 'Four Weddings And A Funeral' but in her role as Brenda, the wife of a nice but boring aristocrat (James Wilby) who falls in love with a pennyless young man (Rupert Graves), she is fairly unimpressive and vague. Rupert Graves and James Wilby are equally average but I still enjoyed the film to an extend regardless until the silly and unrealistic ending really spoilt it for me.

Fans of the better known "Forsters" such as Maurice, A Room with a View, the works of Merchant and Ivory, and fairly similar A Passage to India, may be quite disappointed with this much more quiet and less colourful production. The story-line also offers less of a twist - this is EM Forster's first novel and he was still learning his trade. Still the movie is well worth seeing - the story and the beautiful images in dusky sepias as if taken from old photographs will keep enthralled you in front of the telly if only you can accept that the world changed immensely within the last century. A big bonus is a chance to see world-famous actors in roles not exactly identical with their current careers.

What a charming film with the late great Bob Peck. I knew nothing about this film, even though it was shot near where I come from in Keighley, until I read about it in MADE IN YORKSHIRE. It is also based on true events which happened in Yorkshire.

I had thought it must be dire otherwise I would have heard about. How wrong I was. Was it shown in the cinema ? I have a job tracking it down but found a copy in the Keighley lending library.

Check it out as its well worth watching.

A great adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel about self absorbed people in relationships but oblivious to their partners feeling to the point of sadistic cruelty.

I wanted to kick Tony Last (James Wilbey) as he placidly accepts his wife's sudden decision to have a London flat, study economics whilst he remains in his beloved country house. Brenda Last (Kristin Scott Thomas) is of course having an affair with frankly boring self seeking penniless John Beaver (Rupert Graves), supported by his rather nasty mother (Judi Dench).

Highly recommended and absorbing film about people you would never want to know.
