I went to see this live in the West End and I loved it! I was waiting for it to tour but it didn't come near me, so I was so pleased when the BBC showed it at Christmas. I taped it, and it's wearing out now, so I've got the DVD, and I have to say I love it love it love it!!

The acting is brilliant, the songs are funny, naughty and catchy, the costumes are vibrant. Yes, the camera angles do take a little something from the theatre atmosphere, but the fact that this was filmed from a theatre might encourage more people to go and see things live.

This has always been one of my fave musicals (next to 7 Brides) and I like the stage version much more than the Howard Keel film. The whole thing is a delight for young and ... Read More:

This is a first class production which outshines even the BBC version. Henry Goodman is an outstanding Shylock:a dignified, rounded human being, insisting on his pound of flesh almost against his will. I liked the small but significant touch of Tubal's silent rejection of Shylock in the trial scene and the fact that Balthasar really did look different from Portia - for once Bassanio can be forgiven for not recognising him/her. But it is a pity the return of the rings did not have a lighter touch: a little comic relief is needed by now. There was a lack of humour in the casket scenes, too but all criticism fades with the memory of Goodman's performance.

This is a slightly disappointing disc. The sound is taken from the excellent recording (no longer available) on the l'Oiseau Lyre label. A cast is then assembled in the quire of Gloucester Cathedral to mime along - there are some quite bad moments where the lip-synching is out, and there are shots of instruments playing in the background who are not heard.

The sound does not disappoint, but some viewers will be a little confused by the performance being in the glorious acoustic of Gloucester, whilst the sound itself is quite dry.

DVD : The Search for Robert Johnson [1992] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
The mystery surrounding Robert Johnson's life and death is about as famous, or indeed infamous as his music, and the now legendary 29 tracks he recorded. Also legendary how The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin et al, covered many of his songs way back, and at one point, Eric Clapton, being such an ambassador for both the man and his music, wouldn't speak to anyone who didn't know who Robert Johnson was.
Most of my peers' on the local 'Granddad Rocks' circuit around here not only know who the man is, but also why he was and still is so important in shaping the sound of the music scene even today; and any excuse for not having an album with those 29 tracks on in the collection just isn't good enough - if you're a rocker, it's a MUST!
