Good abracadabra movie... Interesting story, strong cast, moving performances and intricate plot make it highly watchable. It's like riding a roller coaster through an out-of-the-world backdrop. The treat of David Bowie is great. He's the real wizard here. Bale and Jackman deliver top notch performances too. The period is recreated nicely. Although, the forefront of the story is the never-ending rivalry between two aspiring albeit cunning magicians, it is about the consuming nature of envy and revenge. The final payoff of the film is two "big secrets" (somewhat forced though) which unravel at the very final moments.

But, for a movie about love, obsession, revenge, deception and self-absorption, it is remarkably lack of passion. Virtually ... Read More:

This Batman film just shows that the who idea still works. Quite frankly, after the Michael Keaton/Val Kilmer/George Clooney efforts I was beginning to have my doubts.

Sure, there are one or two places where this film may be a bit slow, but on the whole I think that even those patches serve the purpose of explaining how Batman became Batman ... i.e. why the Bat bit. As always the gadgets are brilliant, the one liners excellently delivered and Batman's escapes truly unbelievable - in other words a proper Batman film!

Christian Bale is excellent as Batman, and Michael Caine just about perfect in the role as Alfred the butler - in fact, when I win the lottery and have to hire my own butler Michael Caine will be top of my list ... Read More:

I can't say that I hated or loved this film just something in between.

The storyline in itself is actually quite gripping and there are some clever aspects which make you think. All in all when it came to the end though I thought it was a bit disappointing. It seemed to lack the spark of a well executed production.

If you can cope with the fact that it's very disjointed by starting at the end and then jumping to the beginning continuously (You'll see what I mean if you hire it), and you have a couple of hours to kill, then by all means hire it. I wouldn't expect a masterpiece however!

"Memento" is a film which requires several viewings to appreciate it properly. It has a reverse narrative a la "Mulholland Drive" and "Irreversible" (it probably inspired both of them) and it is gripping from start to finish. The film is about Lenny (Guy Pearce) ,who has been suffering from severe short term memory loss since the rape and murder of his wife. He can recall the details of his life up until this incident, but nothing since it; his memories of people and places fade away in seconds, like the proverbial goldfish in a bowl. As he tries to hunt down his wife's killer , he uses Polaroids, Tattoos and Post-Its to remember key facts and people, but his condition leaves him open to deception and manipulation. The plot is complex and intelligent, the acting ... Read More:

Insomnia is a good thriller thats worth buying for many reasons:

Its a top notch cast. Al Pacino gives one of his his finest late performances as the detective who can't sleep investigating a murder. Robin Williams matches Pacino in his second great role that year (see One Hour Photo for the other), and the always good Hilary Swank gives a very good performance supporting the two main leads.

The director is Christopher Nolan (Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige), who seems to have a natural talent for these type of films. He does a fine job with the actors as well as capturing the sometimes haunting nature of the Alaskan landscape. Nolan is helped by a taught script, and with a running time of less than 2 hours, you will find it difficult to ... Read More:

Following is an excellent debut from the talented Great British Director - Christopher Nolan. Highly original, the story is about a would-be writer who decides to follow strangers in order to develop characters for his novel. He randomly follows an articulate and well dressed thief, and is consequently drawn into his revolutionary approach to theft.

As an audience we are instantly introduced into Nolan's sense of style and mannerism. There is something about his films that keep you gripped throughout. Following is not an ambitious film but worth watching if you want to know how the director of Memento and Batman Begins first started out.

Finally, The Prestige comes in High Definiton for all who don't have a
Region A Blu-ray player, and Warner Bros delivers a great disc.

Picture:
PQ is fantastic, easily up there with Nolan's other HD masterpiece Batman
Begins. Really crisp/sharp picture with fine detail on every frame. Grain
is next to non existant (just like Batman Begins), and is minted from the
same master as the US Blu-ray version. Upon a direct comparison of the 2
formats, they are absolutley identical.

10/10

Sound:
SQ is a little on the down side. Far from terrible, it only comes with a
English Dolby Digital + track and is sorely missing the Dolby TrueHD we
would come to expect on a Warner Bros release. Fortunatley, ... Read More:
