Apart from the actual picture and audio quality not being wonderful on this DVD, the actual content, which is what it is here for, is awesome. Bernstein gets slated a lot for being too harsh on people, or a bully, nothing could be further from the truth. I work in this field full time and Bernstein's approach can defiantly be termed "old school" but not too harsh by any means. As for Jose Carreras being bullied by Bernstein? Hardly. Carreras didn't do his homework, plain and simple, the fact that "Something's coming" had to have take after take and Jose was still unaware that he was miles ahead of the orchestra is proof if proof were needed. Don't get me wrong, I love Carreras, he was just totally unprepared for what was expected of him.

I purchased this DVD for the Grandchildren a few months ago. On first viewing I was a little taken aback by the seemingly restrictive stage set. I long remember this work from my childhood on old 78's when my field of imagination was seemingly much broader than this set.
But, that said, the musical performance is exemplary, beautiful and very professional.
Needless to say the kids absolutely love it and play it over and over. So, there is some hope that the Classics are not yet dead with the young.
My sadness is that the childlike visual imagination is taken over, and that is never ideal.
On subsequent viewings with the children, I too have come to appreciate the simplicity and sincerity of this disc. Well done!

Nothing goes out of date quite so quickly as computer-generated visual effects and this DVD dating from a 1993 German television presentation illustrates that phenomenon. A clever program containing music from four works inspired by the Greek myth of Prometheus -- excerpts from Beethoven's 'Creatures of Prometheus', Liszt's tone poem 'Prometheus', Scriabin's 'Prometheus: Poem of Fire', and Luigi Nono's 'Prometeo' -- and featuring one of the worlds great orchestras, the Berliner Philharmoniker, and one of the world's great pianists, Martha Argerich (in the Scriabin), comes a-cropper because of the cheesy visuals. There are double exposures of the orchestra with images of flames in various colors superimposed, what look like shots of the orchestra shot through various colored ... Read More:
