This is a wonderful film especially for all those who have a 10-year-old horse-mad daughter! Elizabeth Taylor`s portrayal of a girl who has an ambition to win the Grand National is very convincing and gives a preview of her great acting ability. The family life is quite authentic and the viewer is made to feel that they are actually "dropping-in" on a family discussion. They appear as very pleasant people, although one feels the film could have done without "Butch" Jenkins, who seems a little trying!
The highlight of the movie is, of course, the race itself (speeded-up for effect!) In the run-up one can feel the tension Velvet is feeling and we can quite understand her last-minute doubts. There is a wonderful cameo role by Arthur Treacher ... Read More:

I first saw this film as a boy in the 1960s. It is truely an unforgettable masterpiece. I am buying it for my son. He is 6.

It rates alongside Shane. ( I will also get this one. ) If you are under 40 you probably have no idea what I am talking about.

They dont make'em like they used to.

garbos greatest glory
Leo tolstoys multi-layered and sophisticated story is perfectly cast with Garbo as the self-indulgent,pampered and rebellious but flawed aristocrat who cannot take control of her own whims ,but Tolstoy's adultress is played by garbo with a grace where you almost begin to see her as a self martyr who sees herself initially as a rebel and the others as social hypocrites ,but later she is more aware of her own flaws as well and the critical analysis leaves her desperate of her own existence and the meaning of life itself ,

while Vronsky is loyal and logical and in love with anna who he perceives as the ultimate woman, but anna is more than a perception she is a reality as a beautiful, paranoid, insecure and manipulating ... Read More:

All Greta Garbo's key films from the talking era in one box set - only notable exception being Grand Hotel. But this is a minor complaint: it is an ensemble piece (it is included in the Joan Crawford Signature Collection where it clearly shows that young Crawford can more than hold her own in any company) and is, on balance, minor film in Garbo's career.

The films included here - just pay attention to the titles: each is named after her character. Signature collection indeed! I can't think of another star ever to have pulled off such a career proving trick, showing clearly what a huge, huge box office draw she was, and what power "The Swedish Sphinx " held over the studios as well as the public. Not bad for a shy, lanky girl who's single mother ... Read More:

Somehow I never got around to see this movie until I was 40 years old. I guess it was because I was never really an Elizabeth Taylor fan, although I have always enjoyed "The Taming of the Shrew" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" But I was at the library and I had always heard good things about it and so I checked in out and took it home and watched it and feel in love with it.
The plot line involving Mike (Mickey Rooney) starts off as somewhat melodramatic, the standard story (literarly in this case) of the guy who has to get back on the horse. The twist is that when he does our young heroine has decided she is the only one who can ride the Pie to victory. The twist is the Rooney achieves his victory without winning (anticipating "Rocky" in that regard ... Read More:

DVD : The Joan Crawford Collection, Vol. 2 (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Joan's 2nd collection is another very good package-not quite up to the quality of the first region 1 collection- I rate these movies as:
1 Flamingo Road 5 stars
2 Sadie Mckee 4 stars
3 A Woman's Face 3 stars
4 Strange Cargo 3 stars
5 Torch Song 3 stars
If you're a fan of Joan's camp movies though, Torch Song is def top of the pile- finally- a plea to the makers of the documentaries- please do not include that nasty daughter of Joan's in any future DVDs-don't they realise that Joan's fans hate that woman?
